After a breakway with just two riders, Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) attacking from the gun and then joined by Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Oscaro) had dominated the stage, and was finally caught in the final kilometres, the race became a battle between the sprint teams and their sprinters.

Despite being seen quite a way back from the front approaching the launch point for the sprint, Kittel showed that he has the power and speed to beat any of the sprint contenders and as John Degenkolb said afterwards, Kittel’s on another planet.

In that sprint, where Lotto Soudal did a lot of work for their man Andre Griepel who could only manage 12th, it was Britain’s Dan McLay who launched the sprint out of the sprinters but with 350 metres to go, as he admits, it was a bit early and perhaps a bit stupid especially as he had been on Kittels wheel. Having gone so early, Dan faded to finish seventh but Kittel gapped the rest to win as he wanted and is now the German record holder for Tour de France stage wins.

In this year’s race, Marcel Kittel has won four of the five bunch sprints he has contested as he easily beat John Degenkolb and Dylan Groenewegen.

Before the sprint however, and the little mid race battles between the breakaway riders and the sprinters, Gesbert was first atop the two category 4 climbs of the day while Offredo won the intermediate sprint at Saint-Cyprien where André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) won the first battle of the sprinters ahead of Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors).

Marcel Kittel: “I can’t really believe it, it’s number four so that’s actually an incredible amount of Tour de France finishes … to just win it in one Tour is … I can’t believe it. I’m so happy, really it’s super nice, the team worked again so hard and yeah, I’m just speechless, I’m really, really happy.”“I can’t really believe it, it’s number four so that’s actually an incredible amount of Tour de France finishes … to just win it in one Tour is … I can’t believe it. I’m so happy, really it’s super nice, the team worked again so hard and yeah, I’m just speechless, I’m really, really happy.”

“Of course it means something for me [becoming the leading German Tour stage winner] … I don’t know, I won so many stages in the Tour – I never really expected when I started my career to be in the Tour.  I was dreaming maybe at one point to become a professional, but that I would be at this level, with those wins, is for me hard to imagine. I feel like I live in a small little bubble in a small little world that is not really true.”

“I think I had a pretty good spot, because it was still relatively far with 500m to go after the last left corner … so I saw that [Dan] McLay started to sprint very early to come to the front, and that was my lead-out, so from there on I exactly hit the front at I think 220 [metres] and it’s no surprise that I feel really good at the moment in the sprint – and number four was there.”

John Degenkolb: “Super hectic, super crazy,” Degenkolb said about the last kilometers. “I was always focusing, together with Koen (de Kort), to stay on Lotto Soudal’s train because they were strong and organized. They did a great job. With 2kms to go I lost good position, and I had to come from very far. Luckily Marcel (Kittel) was also this far back, and out of the last corner I was on his wheel – I think we were position 25 or something. I was just trying to stay on his wheel, trying to hang on,” laughed Degenkolb.

“I still have a lot of pain from the crash,” said Degenkolb. “On the bike I am the most comfortable, but I still cannot really lift my arm, and during the race I cannot really get bidons or musettes from the side of the road. My teammates have to take it for me because I still cannot put a lot of pressure on the shoulder as there’s still a lot of pain.”

With Koen de Kort’s assistance, Degenkolb managed to maintain a good position, but just when everything seemed to be playing out perfectly, it unraveled in the last two kilometers. “I had to do a full sprint to just stay in his slipstream. I tried to stay in a good position, but it was super hectic, super nervous,” reiterated Degenkolb. “When I was going into the last kilometer, I thought actually that the sprint is already over, but then a small miracle happened that Marcel overtook me on the right side and I could get on his wheel. I had to do a full sprint to just stay in his slipstream, but that gave me the opportunity to get second in the end.”

“Kittel simply left everyone in his dust, an even more amazing feat after coming from so far back. Today he was unbeatable, that’s for sure,” answered Degenkolb when asked if Kittel can be beat. “I don’t know how to beat him – he is super talented and at the moment just very, very good. Right now, I don’t see how anyone can beat him man against man. But this is the Tour, and everything can happen.”

“I am happy with second; it is my best place so far in this Tour. After all that has happened, this is pretty good, and we still have some more opportunities. It’s a good boost of confidence; I am optimistic, my shape is good, and I will fight again tomorrow and the days after. Like I said, the Tour is the Tour, and everything can still happen.”

Dan McLay:  About the final bends, he explained “I tried to stay on the outside because I know riders go in a bit hot and come out wide and slow, and I came out of them really good on Kittel’s wheel but with more speed.”

“I have been so annoyed with myself for waiting, so I just went so long and died a death. I started with 350 to go and that was always going to be too long. At least for once I am not kicking myself for waiting too long.”

“In hindsight it was pretty stupid to leave the guys wheels like Kittel, but at the same time at least I played my cards and the legs were good”. Today I felt pretty in control in the run in. Once we got to the corners, I was able to defend the space and it was less technical that I thought. Today was more satisfying than doing a 50 metre sprint!”

“The team don’t get much room for manoeuvre from the other teams and we end up looking ragged because we’re fighting in the middle and when we tried to hold ground on one side, no-one is patient enough to wait behind so maybe we were a bit ragged through the middle but we’re doing an okay job I reckon and we’ll keep trying”.

Chris Froome: After pulling on his 50th career Tour de France yellow jersey, Froome admitted he was happy with how the day panned out, as well as looking forward to the next GC challenges. He told ITV: “It was quite relaxed as far as Tour de France flat stages go, and another good day to have out of the way now. The next big goal for us is to focus on the Pyrenees, so one more flat day tomorrow and then we head up into the climbs again”.

“The Pyrenees and that Peyragudes stage is going to be extremely decisive. I think we’ll see the GC take even more shape there, then things will back off again and we’re into the final week basically. Then we’ll have the big challenges of Izoard and Telegraphe/Galibier.”

“I’ve been out there studying a lot of the roads and certainly our race director Nicolas Portal has been out driving them and taking video footage for us. There’s a lot of racing still coming up and I think it’s going to still be quite an open race.”

Alberto Contador: “In the end it was a quiet day and in that sense could not come at a better time,” said Contador. “In the final part of the stage, we went behind, trying not to take any risks. My body hurts after two crashes, a little everywhere. It’s normal; we do not have a suit like motorcyclists, it’s our own skin that protects us. But at least with the rain, in this case the bruises are smaller.”

“We’ll see about tomorrow. With a bit of luck, if it’s a day like today I can recover more. I think I have still legs to do a good race. This does not depend on my head, it is a matter of my body, but luckily [the crash] was not as bad as in 2014, or even last year. If I recover, I’ll ride in my way, which is really what I like.”

“This situation perhaps has destroyed my GC chances, but on the other hand, it opens a range of possibilities to do beautiful things. I don’t know when, maybe more in the last week.”

Dylan Groenewegen: “I was too far behind in the last corner,” Groenewegen said. “After that corner, there was 500 metres to go. I came out the corner in 14th position. I should have been more in the front. From that point, I just started sprinting and arrived in third place. I do not know if it cost me the win. We know my speed is there, but Kittel is very strong too.”

“My confidence is good, we know my form is good. We want to compete for top step of the podium and that did not happen, but we are on the right way.”

“We keep on trying, that is our goal. We are always in the top-10 and today we did a little better. Finishing in third place is a good result, but we want more. We are ready for the coming days.”

Warren Barguil: “Today was a good day and I’m glad to be able to wear the jersey (KoM) again tomorrow. Our first goal remains a stage win and then we will see how the mountains classification develops. I will continue giving my all to keep the jersey and fight for the stage win, I feel good and the legs are good so I will remain smart and focused on these goals.”

Simon Yates: “It was a pretty cruisy day on the bike for the most part,” Yates said. “Of course the final is always a little bit stressful. It’s nothing too serious, everyone just wants to stay out of trouble.”
