Tour de France : Stage 20

Bodnar wins Marseille time trial, Froome retains the lead

Poland’s Maciej Bodnar (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the 22.5km individual time trial in the streets of Marseille with an advantage of only one second over his compatriot Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky). Chris Froome confirmed his superiority against the clock taking time from GC challengers Rigoberto Uran and Romain Bardet. The Frenchman Bardet meanwhile almost lost his overall position on the podium and is third by only one second over Mikel Landa.

Following lanterne rouge Luke Rowe (Sky) who was first down the ramp, Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac), the fifth rider to have left the starting ramp, set a time of reference as he was the first rouleur to complete the course in less than half an hour. Fourty five minutes later, Maciej Bodnar (Bora-Hansgrohe) bettered the American at an average speed of 48km/h.

World champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) who was a hot favourite for the stage victory, failed to better the fastest time, finishing 14 seconds slower than the Polish rider Bodnar. Stefan Küng (BMC), second in the inaugural time trial in Düsseldorf, also failed to better Bodnar’s time, losing 34 seconds to the Polish rider.

One of the revelations of the Tour, Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky), wearing the Polish national champion jersey for individual time trial, went close to the top spot but finished a second short on Bodnar after setting better intermediate time checks.

Martin and Küng weren’t the only disappointed favourites. Stage 17 winner Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) who already had a deficit of 25 seconds at the first check point was forced to change his bike at the bottom of the climb to Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde.

Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) showed his pride to pass Warren Barguil on GC with a good ride whilst Frenchman Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) dropped to third but he was close to missing out on the final podium as well as he ended the stage with only a second advantage over Mikel Landa (Sky) overall. Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) moved up to second place while Froome comfortably retained the yellow jersey, eyeing a fourth Tour de France victory in Paris.

Maciej Bodnar (stage winner): “It was a really amazing day for me today. I’ve waited a long time for this moment, for my first stage victory at the Tour de France. When I was a child, my dream was to race in the Tour de France, and now I’ve taken a stage! It is a fantastic moment. I’d like to thank my girlfriend who always stood by me, my mother and, of course, my father who, unfortunately, passed away and wasn’t able to watch this great moment. Thanks go also to my team, BORA-hansgrohe. This victory is for them. We had a tough start at the Tour this year and this victory goes also to Peter and Rafał. We have shown we are a great group.”

Chris Froome: “It’s an amazing feeling and atmosphere in this stadium,” said Froome after stepping off the podium. “Three weeks of racing has almost come to an end and obviously we have to get to Paris tomorrow, but it’s an amazing feeling.”

“It was tough, there were just a 1000 ‘what ifs’ and things that potentially could go wrong and trying to think of all the different scenarios so it was certainly not an easy one coming into today with it being so close. It just feels incredible.”

On Landa: “That’s [missing out] really tough for him (missing third by a second). I think that if anything it shows that he’s definitely capable of being on this Tour de France podium and I imagine that will just give him even more motivation in future.”

Simon Yates: “It will take some time, but it is starting to sink in,” Yates said about the white jersey. “I’m really happy and a little bit relieved that I have pulled it off too. I came here with the goal of winning this jersey from day one and that was no secret. For me it’s a great thing and I’m sure for the team as well. Also with my brother winning it last year it’s nice to keep it in the family, and we hope we can turn them into another colour one day.”

“Every day I have needed to, I went deep. I gave it everything and there were some days that I wasn’t good enough but I really tried to fight as much as possible and do everything I could and finally I have arrived here with the white jersey.”

Dan Martin: “I am tired, it’s been a really tough Tour de France and to be frankly I had no more power left in my legs, but ignored that feeling and rode as hard as I could. I tried to enjoy the great atmosphere the fans in Marseille created on the roads and here, in Stade Velodrome. It was really special to start and finish a stage in the stadium”, the 30-year-old said after the race’s penultimate stage.

Warren Barguil – KoM winner: “The reception of the crowd was really amazing. It’s just nice. The people of Carrefour were standing in front of the start so I was not concentrated on my race. I was just smiling to those people. At the finish, I just said thanks to the crowd with my hand. I wanted to enjoy this moment. It was really crazy”.

Romain Bardet: “I’m exhausted. I’m shattered. I gave everything I had. It’s the Tour de France, some days you feel good, some days you don’t. Today I didn’t feel well. For a few days I had not been feeling well in terms of my health. I paid the price. I could feel from the start that I was not in contention. I was only thinking of making it to the line as quickly as possible.”

“I know my body well. I know when I’m good or not. I was forced to ride with my head. the day after Izoard I felt an immune deficiency. I didn’t feel to well waking up this morning. I could not bow in the final showdown. I’m happy to have saved the podium for one second. I thought about the team, about all the persons who support me, about my team-mates. I didn’t have a right to give up. I gave everything I had and I was a little lucky.”

Michal Kwiatkowski: One second from the win, the Sky rider got the chance for a win – “When you are on the start ramp, you have to belive you can win the stage. It is what motivates you in the time trial. I pushed myself to the limit. I work so much this year on my time trial and the team support me so well with the bike equipment and everything”.

Tony Martin (World champion): “Of course I’m disappointed. I wanted to go for the victory here. But I knew that the climb would be a major challenge for me. I really felt good on the bike after the 3 weeks of racing and the watts data was also OK today. I really wanted to be in the lead in the first intermediate point before the mountain, because I knew I would lose time in the climb, but that didn`t work out. I have certainly raced worse TT’s but this is a big disappointment,” said Tony Martin.

Alberto Contador:  “I am happy with my performance because it shows the legs are not bad at all, knowing that yesterday I felt really really bad,” said Contador. “In general I can say that I felt quite good in this Tour. I could do really hard efforts, but unfortunately, in a few stages I had some setbacks,” said Contador. “I gave it my all in this TT, even though, of course, it was not to fight for the podium anymore.”

“It was a good TT, well especially in the part that suited me best, which was the climb. The plan was to take as much time as possible on the climb. There I really left it all out on the road because it was only 1km long. Other than that, there was also a quite strong wind. It was a last big effort, and now it’s time to get some rest. I can only thank the public for the huge support they gave me because obviously, I did not obtain what I hoped for, nor what I worked for so hard for. So I take their support and the affection they showed me as an honor and a privilege,” he continued.

“The most important thing for me was to finish, either way. My team has been working for me so hard; I owed them to finish this Tour even though the crashes were tough and it took me some time to recover from them. But here we are now, and I am happy to be able to finish this Tour with them.” … continued after advert
