The winner of the Junior World Cyclo-Cross title last winter, junior Paris-Roubaix, Elite Mens Crit championship and a round of the Tour Series, Tom Pidcock showed he can time trial too with victory in the Junior’s mens championship in Norway.
Pidcock completed the 21 kilometres in 28:02, just under 12 seconds faster than his nearest rival. The Junior Tour of Wales winner in August who at the time said the worlds were a target, rode the technical course to perfection, setting a blistering early pace. His first two split times were only bettered by Andreas Leknessund whose early efforts proved too much in the final kilometres.
“I knew a podium was a possibility, but I didn’t really think I’d take the lead and then hold it all the way to the finish like that. I haven’t recovered yet, I was struggling to sit on that chair. When I recover, I think it will sink in a bit more.”
When asked if he realised what he has done today, Tom replied, “no, not really. I have just got my composure back. I probably tried the hardest I have ever tried there. I set off and I didn’t really… I was sort out of it a bit and then started to go full gas and didn’t really stop doing that until the finish. I don’t remember much!”
When put to him he had won two world titles in one year, Tom replied “there’s one left but we’ll see. Last year my legs weren’t there for the road champs at the Euros and if that happens this year, we have a strong team so I am confident we will do well there as well”.
Asked which discipline he likes the most – “the one I am doing well at the moment, everything! I think cyclo-cross is the one I enjoy most”. And on the cross team he is joining he says, “I went to the team presentation and I had a really good time and looking forward to joining them on October 14”.
Great Britain Cycling Team’s Fred Wright finished an excellent 19th, under a minute behind Pidcock’s time.
In the Women’s World Time Trial Championship, Hannah Barnes was an excellent 9th and Elinor Barker 19th despite a problem with her bike that stopped her from using the small chainring.

The day before, there were more great performances. Scott Davies was 10th in the Under 23 Men’s Time Trial whilst in the Junior Women’s race, Pfeiffer Georgi was seventh. The ride though that was being lauded around the world was that of Britain’s Lauren Dolan.
Dolan crashed midway through her time trial when her front wheel hit a hidden drain cover. She flew over the handlebars and crashed into a concrete barrier. Dolan, 18, said: “I was devastated and I still am, but I kept going and I made sure I got to the finish line. I’m in a lot of pain. My leg has been stitched up and the operation took about two hours. I am nauseous and waiting to get a flight back home now. It’s my 18th birthday today and I won’t forget it for a long time.”
Despite her injuries and the fact she had to use a road bike after her time trial machine was damaged, Dolan finished 27th – just two minutes and 24 seconds behind winner Elena Pirrone of Italy. She has been replaced by team-mate Lauren Murphy in the junior women’s road race on Friday.
