National Trophy Shrewsbury: Day 1

The National Trophy CX round 3 got underway at midday with with the veteran women’s race and while Kate Eedy and Maddie Smith had a right battle for the lead at the front, Helen Pattinson (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s), still smiling, had a bad start and spent the race chasing in third.

Kate Eedy celebrates a win again in the vet womens category

L-R: Marie Jackson, Tracey Fletcher and Nicola Davies

Behind her was Tracey Fletcher wearing her world champion stripes and holding position in 4th to the end and crossing the line first over 50. At the front of the race, it wasn’t until the final lap or so that Eedy finally broke Smith and got a gap which she held to the end to win in the series leader’s jersey.

Next race was the Over 50’s and this was marred by a big crash at the start where prominent vet Vic Barnett was taken to hospital with a leg injury. We wish Vic a speedy recovery and anyone else injured in the crash.

At the front Pete Middleton and Timothy Davies were not giving an inch as those two battled for the lead and there were times when Davies appeared to have a good gap but Middleton kept on coming back.

Over the last lap, Middleton managed to gap Davies and it was Middleton who won the race whilst Davies had the consolation of taking the leader’s jersey off Chris Young who was 4th behind Steve Knight who came from behind his teammate Phil Roach to climb up the result as the race went on.

In the final race of the afternoon, Paul Oldham made his debut in the trophy series in the Vets Category and it there was three way battle for the lead between Oldham, world vets champion Ian Taylor and legend Nick Craig. As the race went on, Oldham managed to force a gap, however small, on the other two who continued to chase.

The last lap saw Oldham cruise to the win but the fight for second went down to the last off camber section where Taylor got the better of Craig and they finished in that order.

Ian Taylor (2nd), Paul Oldham (1st) and Nick Craig (3rd)
