World Track Champs: Bronze for Mark Stewart

Great Britain’s Mark Stewart digs deep to win a Bronze medal in a thrilling points race at the 2018 Track Cycling World Championships. The Scot took a lap early on in the 160-lap race but found himself out of the medals with 50 laps remaining.

But he was able to take a further lap which propelled him into second heading into the final sprint. Jan-Willem van Schip won the sprint to take silver on 52 points to Stewart’s 49, as Cameron Meyer defended his title with 70 points.

“That was everything a Points race should be and everything I expect it to be,” Stewart said. “My first medal at a Worlds and to do it in the Points race, it’s my favourite event, I absolutely love it. I’m really happy.”

The medal leaves Great Britain with a tally four – one gold, two silver and one bronze.

Charlie Tanfield came close to adding individual pursuit bronze to his team pursuit gold as his amazing debut world championships continued. The 21-year-old pushed Russia’s Alexander Evtushenko close but missed out by two seconds as he stopped the clock in 4:15.930. Tanfield had qualified third fastest in 4:14.025. Team KGF teammate Dan Bigham was ninth with a time of 4:20.647.

Elinor Barker was sixth in the omnium as Kirsten Wild won her second gold of the championships. Barker was seventh in the opening scratch race, which was restarted from 15 laps to go after a crash forced the race to be stopped.

But a superb tempo race triumph saw Barker roll off six consecutive lap wins for victory and move to second in the overall standings. Seventh in the elimination race, which was restarted after a crash which took Barker to the floor, left her in third.

An entertaining Points race saw laps gained and the overall change, with Barker taking one point to finish on 97 with Wild winning on 121.
