The best young rider of the 2016 Tour de France, Adam Yates came within three seconds of victory for Mitchelton-SCOTT on stage three of Tirreno-Adriatico after a late attack and chase up the steep final climb to the town of Trevi.
The longest stage of the race was deceptively described as a mid-mountain stage, but included more than 3,000 metres of elevation over 239 kilometres and it was a slow affair until right at the end. Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) took the initiative with two kilometres to go and attacked up the final climb to take the stage win with Yates very close behind in second.

Decisive Moments
As expected the breakaway formed quickly, over the opening ten kilometres. Five riders went clear and gained a maximum of eight minutes over the peloton before the tempo started to rise in the final 100 kilometres of racing.
Falling rapidly over the closing 50 kilometres, the leaders desperately tried to cling on, but the game was up ahead of the two finishing circuits of picturesque Trevi with the quintet finally caught with 12 kilometres to go.
The first climb up through the hillside town of Trevi peaked at 16% and the first passage of the line proved too much for the breakaway with a reduced group of around 40 riders now leading the race. On the final circuit, Roglic attacked with only two kilometres remaining and carved out an advantage he would hold to the line, an advantage that came under threat from Yates who gave up waiting for Team-Sky and set off in pursuit with 200metres to go.
It was a valiant effort for Yates who missed out on the win by only three seconds, holding on for second place on the day.

Adam Yates – Second Place: “Roglic went pretty early and showed that he is very strong and there’s not much you can do when a guy is going that well and holding off the bunch. I felt that I went at the right time, on the steep section, but I didn’t catch him.”
“I am feeling really good, but when I lost over a minute yesterday and taking into consideration the time trial on the last stage, it’s fair to say that the GC is pretty much out of the window. We’ve got two more high stages to come, we’re racing day by day so we will see what happens.”
Head Sport director Matt White: “It was a real classics style stage today with a couple of tricky circuits coming right at the end and after yesterday the focus for us became trying to win a stage and adapting our pre-race objectives.”
“We came very close today with Adam, it was a difficult climb up to the line and we almost achieved our objective. You can never be happy with second place, especially when you come so close to the win, but we’ve got a couple more chances to come.”
“The boys did very well looking after Adam today, they stayed disciplined and together and Adam showed that he is one of the best climbers here.”
