Women’s

Rhona Callander sealed a maiden victory of the season by snatching glory in the Women’s Road Series race at the Otley Town Centre Races after a battle for victory with Melissa Lowther who for the second race in a row, was in the winning break – the other being the British RR Championship on Sunday.

Annabel Fisher of Team Jadan-Weldtite Vive le Vido was the first to try for freedom from the big peloton before the race got up to speed and then a double winner at the Tour Series, Megan Barker went for a solo effort.

The Welsh rider opened up a 19 second gap and held that for a few laps before a chase brought her back. It was then the turn of Lowther on her Boardman Bike and Callander to pull away. Series leader Sophie Wright was clearly being followed around and had to rely on teammate Laura Massey to help the chase but the break wasn’t coming back.

Callander sprinted to victory over Lowther and then Megan Barker beat Grace Garner to the line in the bunch kick.

Matt Walls of the GB Academy showed he had the biggest balls as he and Matt Gibson slid through the final corner together and Walls gapped his rival to go on to win one of the biggest names in British Circuit Races, the Otley Grand Prix.

The race didn’t have much of a story to tell. The action started quickly with JLT Condor’s Jon Mould, Joey Walker of Team Wiggins and Jake Alderman of Saint Piran breaking away on the very first lap.

Their lead did not last long however and they were replaced by a four-man break with local boy done good Tom Pidcock who earlier had a lap driving the lead car Porsche a little quicker than he was circuitlating may hours later. instead taking up the charge soon after.

With the Team Wiggins rider was Madison Genesis’ rider Richard Handley, Tom Moses of JLT Condor and Steve Lampier of Saint Piran, back in the race saddle after a stint driving the Saint Piran car as DS. This group was able to open up a lead of half a minute and lap after lap held the lead despite chases from various teams and riders like Harry Tanfield of Canyon Eisberg.

A bike change for one of the favourites Rob Scott – the Wiggins rider chased back to the peloton

And then their was two – Pidcock leads Moses – These two fought out the finish for the Klondike GP early season where Tom P got the better of Tom M….

Matt Walls wins and wins well…

The break looked like sticking but then JLT Condor decided Pidcock wasn’t going to be beaten and flexed their muscle by bringing the break, now with just Pidcock and JLT’s Moses in it, back to the bunch with a lap to go. With Matt Gibson their chosen sprinter, who’d had a ‘moment’ on the final corner when Jonny McEvoy (Madison Genesis) crashed early on, JLT had their eggs in the bunch sprint basket but Matt Walls got amongst them and came away with a decisive victory.
