Russell Downing wins his club’s 130 kilometres Out of Saddle Summer Road Race in tough windy conditions

Result: Out of the Saddle Summer RR

57 riders took to the start for 130km in tough windy conditions. A group of 16 riders went clear on the 2nd lap, these 16 included notable names such as Local Legend Russell Downing of Holdsworth Pro Cycling, Vitus Pro Adam Kenway and Ed Hopper of Ribble Cycling. With this group working so well and the bunch behind attacking each other there was never any doubt that these 16 would contest the finish, despite losing a couple of riders, who found the pace a little to much.

With 2 laps to go Russell had forced clear and held a 20 second gap on the remaining 13 riders. At the bell the break was all together again and a sprint would decide the placings and so it was that Russell shaking off an illness that had affected much of his season proved to strong and comfortable took the win ahead of Toby Atkins of ActiveEdge Race Team, with Ed Hopper rounding out the podium positions.
