Chris Froome made one of the most notable transfers of this winter with his transfer to Israel Start-Up Nation. In a video for his new team, the four-time Tour winner talks for the first time since his transfer. “I am very optimistic about the coming season” he explain.
After eleven successful seasons with Team Sky and INEOS Grenadiers, Froome closed the door behind the British squad for a new adventure. “It was quite a big decision to come to Israel Start-Up Nation. My former teammate Kjell Carlström, now the manager at ISN, approached me and not much later the first conversations with team owner Sylvan Adams followed. ”
Adams, a 62-year-old businessman, has high hopes. The billionaire sees in Froome the rider who can give his team the overall victory in the Tour. “There was an immediate click. The passion was clearly visible in him, ”says the Brit. “We came to the conclusion that my coming to ISN is not for one or two years, but that this is a commitment to the end of my career and possibly even beyond.”
“I am now 35 years old and have just returned from a serious injury (Dauphiné 2019). After eleven seasons with the same team, I also felt that I was copy-pasting every year, ”he says. “Changing teams at this point in my career gives me so much more mental stimulation and motivation: it’s a whole new project, a whole new chapter. This feels rejuvenating to me. ”
Froome has been in the United States since late last year, where he is preparing for the new season in California. “The weather here is much better than in Europe and I can work my hours on the bike. But more importantly, I can work here at the Red Bull High Performance Center. This winter I focus on my instability and weaknesses, which I got from my injury. I feel very optimistic about the coming season. ”
“My goals have not changed. I want to return to the highest level. I want to compete for the victory in the Tour and the other big laps. I am really looking forward to the start of the season. I hope this is the start of a long-term, challenging and successful collaboration ”, he concludes.
