Good Friday: Teign Valley Hilly TT

Good Friday sees the return of cycle racing to the west country with Mid Devon CC’s promotion of the annual Teign Valley Hilly TT, over a tough 23 mile course which skirts the edges of Dartmoor. The event is something of an SW institution having been run for over 40 years with past winners including Colin Lewis, Harry Lodge, Jez Hunt, Blake Pond and Tom Baylis. The lack of racing so far this year means the event has attracted a record field of 110 riders and undoubtedly its highest-quality field ever – with a number of domestic pro riders featuring on the start sheet.

Topping the bill is Saint Piran’s Steve Lampier, one of the UK’s most consistent road men, but also a prolific TT winner on the south-west circuit. He is likely to face stiff competition from ‘local men’ Max Steadman of Hunt Bike Wheels and Ribble Weldtite’s Fred Scheske. Former national espoir hill-climb champion, George Kimber (Spirit Tifosi) and No-Pinz Tom Nancarrow also feature on the start sheet. ‘Dark horse’ in the field is British U-23 mountain biker Harry Birchill, who grew up on the circuit and who smashed the course record on the local ‘club ten’ last summer, which forms part of the route for the event.

In the women’s event Natasha Reddy (Bianchi Dama), Clementina Davies (Yeovil CC), Tara Grosvenor (Velo Vitesse) and junior Hannah Rainger, look likely to be fighting out the prizes.

There is a strong field for the junior event too, with 4 of the promoting club’s riders Harry Jukes, Reuben Heal, Callum Start and Rob Harrison likely to be vying for the top positions.
