The sunny weather brought the riders out in force for the second event in the series in the lovely picturesque village of Appleton Roebuck. The riders set off in groups of four with the scratch group having some notable entrants including Tom Barras, Kit Gilham, Dave Shackelton as well as sprinter Giles Pidcock.

The groups worked well together for the first couple of laps, however a touch of wheels was the misfortune of Richard Sharp of Clifton who sustained mild concussion and an injured elbow.

The scratch group weren’t hanging around and soon were on the back of the third group with three laps to go and had moved swiftly through to the front of the race and gained a 27 second advantage.

The riders in the group however were to look at each other to see who would be the sprinters and the distance riders and taking no chances, three riders broke away, Dave Shackleton – Wilson Wheels, Kit Gilham Metalek Knights and Tom Barras – Wheelbase.

The rest of the chasing group of 8 were happily keeping the distance ahead of the rest of the field to make the race go down for a sprint for 4th place. The leaders established a 59 second gap and rolled it out for one of the tightest finishes in years on the Yorkshire roads with Dave Shackelton taking the win from Tom Barras by a tyre width, when the photo was blown up to full size on the computers. Kit Gilham came over the line a bike length behind for 3rd.

A superb sprint saw the organising clubs specialist sprinter Giles Pidcock – Chevin Cycles taking 4th for the bunch sprint for the remaining top ten places. A mention must go out to Brit Tate for taking the ladies prize for best placed lady finisher.

It was a superb event organised by Sonja Harper with a lovely headquarters at the Shoulder of Mutton public house which the riders certainly enjoyed afterwards.
