It was good to see an old established course back in use again tonight for the third handicapped event run superbly by Sonja and her team at Chevin Cycles and Crosstrax. The course is undulating and goes through a lovely idyllic village of Saxton.

Seventy riders took to the start line in four groups and starting racing right from the gun. After a lap, the two back groups came together with some strong riding by the scratch group. The following two laps saw the first two groups forming into a rather large main group on the road.

The course had plenty of sight lines for riders and officials to see the race clearly ahead and the gap reduced to 1 minute 16 to the chasing riders. Then, with two laps to go, the scratch group had the bit between their teeth and reeled in the lead group of riders.

This was to set off the odd lone attack by riders but they were soon brought back setting up a superb bunch finish to challenge the judges on the line. It went all the way down to the wire and culminated in the first win of the series for Peter Barusevicus – Dirtwheels RT from series leader Dave Shackleton (Wilson Wheels), with Joe Richards Lakes RC in third. Dave Shackleton takes the yellow jersey into the fourth week.
