Hutchinson beats Bottrill to the men’s 10 title, Julia Shaw wins the women’s race, Chris Lawless the Junior category

Men’s Report
Saturday afternoon in the east of the country, Britain’s finest time trialists gathered in the small town of Hingham (Norfolk) to take part in the RTTC Mens National 10 mile championship. Riders would complete the circuit of Hingham, on the B1077 and take in the villages of Caston, Rocklands, Great Ellingham and then return to the village Hingham. With three hard turns and a technical circuit to negotiate, it would be a true test for the 150 riders taking part.

The event kicked off at 11pm with the last rider away at 13.40 being defending champion Michael Hutchinson. Riders took the challenge in hand with most riders struggling to break the 21 minute barrier. It was a sure sign that the course being used would be a true test for rider and machine. With hardly any traffic on the open roads, first rider to get under the 20.30 barrier was Mark Holton (www.drag2zero.com) showing great form to complete the course in 20.18.

This was then followed by former junior champion Ryan Mullen (IG Sigma Sport) at just 18 years of age, Mullen showed he’s a real star of the future and finished with 20.16. With the majority of the field home, the fight for the team prize was underway between www.drag2zero.com and In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT. Next came super vet Jeff Jones, (www.drag2zero.com), who was the first rider to complete the course at over 30mph in a time of 19.59.

With just four riders to finish it was looking like a podium finish so could be in the bag for Jones? Just two minutes later came Douglas Dewey (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) with the likes of Sean Yates and Jon Sharples in his corner and with some outstanding results in France. Dewey did not disappoint with a very rapid 19.36, to take the lead. Another two minute’s and Olympic Gold medalist Steven Burke MBE (Node4-Giordana Racing Team) finished with 20.02, unable to bring his track speed to the course but just showing how high the standard of Britain’s time trailing has become.

The final battle of the day came between defending champion and nine time winner of the event, Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) and Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) who were 1st and 2nd last season. Both riders were undefeated in 2013 and one rider was going to have go away having been beaten. Bottrill took to the road first at 13.38, riding aboard his new tricked out Giant bike, Bottrill hit the start hard and was soon at full speed.

Turning a gear of 56 x 12, the first section of the course was rapid and Bottrill set the fastest time of 9.23. Next Hutchison, also on a mission, and came to the halfway point five seconds behind Bottrill. Unofficial time checks all around the course at seven miles showed the pair were neck and neck.

With a build-up of lactic acid in the legs and fatigue taking hold, the last section into a block head wind saw Bottrill’s legs give way and with nothing left, Bottrill churned his biggest gear around to stop the clock in 19.27. Less than two minutes later, Hutchinson showed true class and his ability to pace the course just right in 19.20.

In the battle for the team prize, In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT won from www.drag2zero.com by a meare 11 seconds with both teams placing their rider in the top 10.

After the finish, we caught up with an exhausted Bottrill “Well what can you say. Happy with my ride but gutted to finish second. I gave it everything I had on the day and know it’s probably one of the best time trials I’ve ridden. I may have started too quick but I just wanted to win so much. You think you’re indestructible but the truth is the power meter never lies.”

In two weeks time, the battle of the Blue ribbon event of time trailing takes place, with Hutchinson, Bottrill, Dewey, Jones, Mullen and Holton in the mix along the pairing of IG Sigma Sport pairing of Wouter Sybrandy and European former junior time trial champion Joe Perrett in the mix. It’s going to be a very interesting battle!
