Men’s report
On Sunday morning, the UK’s finest time trialist gathered in the small town of Tattershall, Lincolnshire to take part in the Blue ribbon event of time trialing, the Mens National 25 mile championship. Riders would complete the circuit of Coningsby, on the B1192, and take in the villages of Langrick, Antons Gowt, Revesby and then return to the village of Tumby.

With some technical bends, rough roads and windy conditions to negotiate, it would be a true test for the 150 riders taking part. The event kicked off at 9am with the last rider away at 11.40, defending champion Michael Hutchinson. Riders took the challenge in hand with most riders struggling to break the 53 minute barrier. It was a sure sign that the course being used would be a true test for rider and machine, with hardly any traffic, on the open roads.

First rider to get under the 53 barrier was former junior national 25 champion Brett Harwood, (Terry Wright Cycles Rc), showing great form to complete the course in 52.58. This was then followed by another former junior champion Ryan Mullen, (IG Sigma Sport), at just 18 years of age Mullen showed he’s a real star of the future and finished with 50.57, to put him well clear on the leader board.

With the majority of the field home, the fight for the team prize was underway between www.drag2zero.com, In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT and IG Sigma Sport. Next Home was Mark Holton, www.drag2zero.com, in a time of 51.38, This was then followed by Bronze medalist in the men’s National 10, a few short weeks ago Douglas Dewey, In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT.52.58 who said afterwards he felt terrible and couldn’t get the power out he normally does.

Surprise upset as Michael Hutchinson of Ingear-Trainsharp was beaten but the defeat certainly breathed new life into the championship after he has dominated it for so long.

With just four riders left, Jeff Jones, www.drag2zero.com, did a very rapid 51.38, to put the Drag2zero team in the hot seat for the team prize. With Just three riders to come home, Joe Perrett (IG Sigma Sport), Matthew Bottrill, www.drag2zero and Michael Hutchinson, In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT, The race was truly underway!

First rider to leave was former European Junior time trial Joe Perrett, (IG Sigma Sport) and with a recent trip to Belgium and stage racing in the the Tour of Ireland, Perret came to the race in great shape. With an opening 12.5miles of 24.28. There was only one way word to describe the youngster – flying! Just two minutes later Bottrill took to the start, stamping down on the pedals, Bottrill was in full stride and hit the first 10 miles in 19.17, with an unofficial time check putting Bottrill seconds behind Perrett.

By the halfway point, Bottrill had narrowed this down to to just 5 seconds 24.33. With both riders now into the hardest section of the course, it was going to be a great battle. Michael Hutchinson, In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT, was well into his ride, wanting to defend his title, Hutch has always been the master of timing his rides to perfection.

At the 12.5 mile point, Hutch, went through in a time of 24.41, in 3rd place. But with the hardest section still to come, into the block headwind, the race was truly underway, and would come down to who had the best form to take the title First home was Perrett, with a rapid 49.21, then came Bottrill 49.31, with Hutch still to come, it was a fight to the line but the defending Champion finally cracked into the finish with a time of 49.58.

There was one consolation Prize for Bottrill, with 49.21, Jeff Jones 51.38 and Mark Holtons 51.47, www.drag2zero.com took the team prize.

Joe Perrett (IG Sigma Sport) wering the Gold cap spoke toVeloUK afterwards – “This is a very nice thing for a time trialist to win so I’m very happy” he said afterwards. “I’ve been looking forward to this event all season and I hope to progress from this. I tried to keep the ride as simple as possible because I tend to over think things.”

“I have been practising all year and started hard and tried to hold the pace. I just kept saying to myself, don’t think, just ride. I think it favoured me being more technical in parts but the long straight down the back was horrendous. That was a cross head wind and horrible.”

“The finish was very enjoyable though as it was a tailwind and the roads were good; overall I liked the circuit and enjoyed it.”

“Before the race I had the RAS where I was the only rider in the team left after the others were injured or ill and then I rode a pro kermesse where I was 8th in a strong field and I was very happy with that. Before the start, I was quietly confident. I hope to keep progressing to the end of the year and see what I can get out of it.”

After the finish we caught up with an exhausted Matt Bottrill, “Well, what can you say, I’m happy with my ride but gutted to finish 2nd. I gave it everything I had on the day, and know its probably one of the best time trials I’ve ridden. People where shouting time checks all around the course but I had no idea who I was up or down on. I can’t tell you how gutted I am to have come so close to have won. But this time around there’s nothing more I could have done. I gave it 110% and I just got beat by a better rider on the day!”
