On Wednesday evening Wakefield organised an evening road race on the Sharlston circuit. It was to the first event in the area to use the accredited Marshall scheme, approved by the department of transport.

Thirty riders set off knowing they could corner safely as traffic was being held, this made for a superb evening if racing. The race set off at a rapid pace and within 2 miles as they hit the wide open bypass the second cats had raised the bar and five riders went clear.

Sam Ward Dirtwheels, Andy Shaw Out of the saddle, Danny Webb Team Cystic Fibrosis James Baillie Langsett cycles and Alistair Hepworth Clay cross RT. at the end of the first lap these riders had a break of 19 seconds. These riders worked well together for a winner move.

The gap went out to 35secs then 1.34 and eventually to 2.20. The break away riders stayed together until the last lap when Sam Ward jumped clear to take the win from Alastair Hepworth and James Baillie.

Only bad point of the evening was a fall by Tim Mansfield of Huddersfield star wheelers who looks like he’s got a broken collar bone. It was a safely controlled event, on a lovely summers evening and the riders did the course proud, with excellent racing. Definitely the way forward with the marshalling.
