Stuart Wearmouth solos in to win round 10 of the North East Cyclo-Cross Series at South Shields on Sunday

Thanks Steve …

Back on familiar territory, Stuart Wearmouth (MTS) produced a faultless display in the CXNE Round 10 at Temple Park Leisure Centre at South Shields.

Wearmouth extended his lead in the overall series and banked a valuable 200 points as the series heads towards the point when his main rival Tony Fawcett (Team Scott UK) will be forced to show his hand having only ridden 4 events this season and requiring another 4 of the remaining 5 events to count.

Wearmouth was quick to chase down Simon Forster (Tyne & Wear Fire Service) who was first away from the gun. However with the first switchback completed, Wearmouth led after the first set of hurdles within sight of the start, and from then on it was business as usual, leading through to start the second with 11 seconds in hand over Keith Murray (Team Scott UK) and Colin Ash (Cestria Cycles RT) who replaced Alan Nixon from last week and assisted the chase.

With the gap at the end of lap 2 to Wearmouth now up to 34 seconds, and fourth placed Jonny Flecther (M Steel Cycles) another 33 seconds back , it was evident the battle for second was providing the main focus of the event. Neck and neck at the end of the 3rd, the fourth was decisive.

With Wearmouth already a minute clear, Murray attacked Ash and finished the lap with a clear 6 seconds in hand. Ash though fought on until the 7th when Murray added another 13 seconds to his 11 second lead over third place. As though was not finished and amazingly pulled back 8 over the course of the penultimate circuit.

As Murray crossed the line, almost 3 minutes behind Wearmouth thought it all became clear as the toll of the previous two weeks made even a vain attempt at a finish line wheelie seem a task. Kenny Johnson (Team Scott UK) scored his second series win this season when he came out best with a race long battle with James Anderson (Adept Precision RT), Keith Ashbridge (VC Cumbria), James Edmond (Ferryhill Whs), Richard Noble (Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue) and Dave Hopper (Cestria CC). With Anderson and Johnson giving as good as the other one gave. Forster’s consolation was to take the combined North East Fire and Rescue competition prize.

With 2 to go 4 seconds separated the first 4 riders until the leading pair of Anderson and Johnson, almost blind to the fact that anyone was anywhere near them, attacked each other and pulled out a 10 second gap. As they headed towards the line, it could have gone either way, but approaching the last corner, Johnson just managed to get the faster line to cross the line a mere second ahead.

Nicola Davies (Beacon Whs) extended her series lead in the Women’s competition as her 159 points gave her a 9 point advantage over second placed Michelle Caisley (Northumbria Police CC) who was breathing down her neck by a third of a point before today. Karen Robinson (One Life Racing) completed the first three places.

If anyone was to come close to Wearmouth’s domination of their event, it had to be his 15 year old team mate Thomas Mein , Mein shot away from the start, chased furiously by last weeks winner Mark Donovan (Beacon Whs), however Donovan, no doubt suffering the effects of last weeks crash, appeared to be in no mood for a scrap as Mein consistently pulled away. Taking the bell, Mein’s 23 second lead left Donovan with a similarly clear lead over Joe Howard (Marton RT). Donovan’s team mate Connie Hurton produced a fabulous ninth place to take the Youth Girls prize ahead of Rhianna Stoves (Derwentside CC) who came in 2 places behind and Anna Kay (Hetton Hawks) in third.

Joseph Allen added to Hettons prize list when he took home the Under 14 boys prize and Fiona Turnbull likewise for the Under 14 Girls. Barnaby Walkinshaw kept Beacon Wheelers name on the leader board as he came in well clear of Hugo Lutz Atkinson (Marton RT) at the end of the 37 rider field of the Under 12’s event. Somewhat worryingly for the rest of the field though was the fact that third place went to Sam Murray (Scott Sports), one of 2 Murray siblings in the field, Ellis also well placed in the Under 10s. Grace Castle (Newcastle Phoenix) also continued to give a warning for the future as she placed 7th, with the six riders ahead of her all boys, and the first three in the higher age group!
