Vicars’ role with the team will be to act as an advisor, identifying opportunities for the Team to expand its sponsorship base and make the necessary steps to take the brand back to the pinnacle of professional cycling. Following the announcement Team Manager Cherie Pridham said: “Not only is John a powerful addition to Team Raleigh’s management structure, he is also a keen cyclist so I’m thrilled to have his support.

“Keeping a local connection is particularly important to Team Raleigh so this partnership will hopefully cement strong ties for the future. The partnership is already paying dividends as, with John’s help, we have been able to bolster the supporting infrastructure needed to run such a high profile team.”

Vicars, who can often be spotted in Derbyshire on his Raleigh Militis, added: “The Raleigh brand is iconic and known throughout the world for the manufacture of quality bicycles. It has lots of history in Derby and perhaps what is not that widely known is that their professional cycling team is based here in the city.

“As a cycling enthusiast I feel very honoured to have been asked to take this role alongside the team’s French patron – the five time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault. “I was approached several months ago to help the team, which is now under new management, to provide strategic direction and identify areas where they could increase commercial revenues and we are now gearing up for what promises to be an exciting 2014 season for the team on the Continental Tour.

“I am also delighted to announce that Team Raleigh will carry the ‘Ram’ on their race jerseys and team vehicles this season bringing awareness to both the City and Derby County Football Club as they compete across Europe and here in the UK. Derby is fast gaining a reputation as a cycling city and this arrangement will no doubt compliment the new velodrome and other local initiatives.”
