Dave Griffiths, 37, won the Wrekinsport Hilly Time Trial in 40 minutes, 59 seconds. The race, an 18-mile course, is seen as the start of the cycling season in Shropshire.

It is the third time that Dave, from Oswestry, has won the race, beating his previous record in 2010 of 41 minutes, 26 seconds and finishing 47 seconds before the next rider.

Dave was selected to race for the Paramount Performance CRT from riders from the Paramount CRT club. He said: “It was a great start to the season. It was hard going as it was the first time trial I have done in eight months so it was a bit of a shock to the system.”

Dave put his success down to a new training regime he has started for the season. He said: “Instead of going for longer riders, my rides are shorter but more intense and that’s helping.” Dave, an engineer manager working in Chester, said he is looking forward to the new season, especially to doing more time trials. “Last year was mainly road racing but this year, with family and work commitments, it will be mainly time trials,” he said.

Fellow team member Victoria Grimmer, 31, from Copthorne, Shrewsbury, has also had a successful start to the season. She came 9th in her first race, the Pimbo Circuit at Skelmersdale, Lancashire, which wins her British Cycling points. “It felt really good,” she said. “It was not a race that suited me because I’m not really a flat, fast racer. I suit more open roads but I need to work on building up my strength on the flat and it was good for me to place with some experienced racers.”

Victoria, a police constable in Shrewsbury, said she is pleased with her start to the season.

“It was a safe environment with closed roads so it was a good race to learn tactics in,” she said. Members of the Paramount Cycle Racing Team club are now off to Majorca for a week’s training camp organised with Stan’s Travel, run by Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, on March 17.

Ben Lawrence, managing director of sponsors insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence, and the racing team manager, said the training week is great preparation for the season.

He said: “They will do a wide range of rides, from long rides out to flatter days and a massive sprint into Puerto Pollensa. They will also cycle in land, which means they will see some villages which are off the beaten track a bit,” he said.

Mr Lawrence said he was thrilled with getting Paramount’s first win of the season in the bag already. He said: “It’s great and Dave won by a big margin too. I’m looking forward to seeing more great results from the team.”
