Lizzie Armitstead wins World Cup Race

After a season in 2013 which did not do her talents justice, Lizzie Armitstead has opened the 2014 season with a bang, winning the first round of the Women’s World Cup in a two up sprint.

With the race splitting in the final 30 kilometres, and then splitting again, the Otley rider attacked out of a small selection on the climb of the Vamberg and bridged to the lone leader, Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv).

The experienced Armitstead was then too good for the young Dutch woman in the rush to the line and had plenty of space around her to celebrate a wonderful victory ahead of a big year for Women’s racing. American rider, Shelley Olds finished third.

It was a messy finishing loop for the riders with the chasers being taken off course at one point behind two leaders. The two though became one as Anna van der Breggen dropped her teammate Iris Slappendel and after a long spell out front, had little chance of holding off a rampaging Armistead who showed all her main rivals a clean pair of heals in the attack to join van der Breggen.

Once in the lead, the two had the fire power to stay clear and it was then a simple one on one fight for the top step of the podium won by a jubilant Armitstead.

“We have worked hard as a team today” Lizzie said afterwards. “I knew I had strong legs in recent races (three podiums in three races) but it feels liberating to win! My goal this season was to win more and have more peaks and this is a good first result.”
