Report & Results – Modbury Spring Road Races
(thanks to Will Hornby)
The first round of the Kalas SW Women’s Race Series was organised in Modbury by Cycle Sport South Hams as part of a full day of racing with 3 separate road road races on a 13 mile circuit.
Category 3/4
The day began with the 3 lap race for 3rd and 4th Category male riders who began the race at a great pace which saw many out of contention after the first lap. It was Mark Lees from North Devon Wheelers – South Fork who took the win with an impressive solo victory. He also won the previous weekends Falco RR no. 2 in Cornwall.
Mark Lees broke away with James Davey Mid Devon CC and one other rider on the first lap and showed his strengths as a time trialist to hold off the bunch by himself after riding away from his 2 breakaway companions.
By the start of the 3rd lap the tough course and fast racing meant there only around 30 riders left in contention for 2nd place. There was a split in the group chasing Mark Lees on the third lap which saw 7 riders escape but with 4 miles to go they were brought back to the bunch. Good performances in the sprint for 2nd from the clubs own riders Julian Green taking 5th and promising Junior Connor Cranfield 7th.
1st Mark Lees – North Devon Wheelers
2nd James Davey – Mid Devon CC
3rd Jason Poore – Mid Devon CC
4th Ryan Vale – Somerset RC
5th Julian Green – Cycle Sport South Hams

7th Connor Cranfield – Cycle Sport South Hams

E/1/2/3
The afternoon began with the second men’s race for Elite, 1st, 2nd and 3rd category riders who faced 5 laps of the same 13 mile circuit. It was Callum Ferguson Zappis Racing Team who took top honours in the race edging out breakaway companion Scott Gurnett – Tanks Direct Cycling.
An attacking race meant that the riders were spread across some 10 minutes as they crossed the finish line for the final time. Callum Ferguson proving to be just too strong for first year senior rider Scott Gurnett and showed great form in this race after a recent period of racing in Italy with his team.

Ladies Race
The last race of the afternoon was a 3 lap Women’s race and the opening round of the Kalas SW Women’s Race Series. It was Anneliese Heard – Starley Primal Pro Cycling who took top honours in the race with an impressive victory.
Anneliese won the race from a breakaway group of 6 riders which formed at the end of the 1st lap. After the group of 6 riders escaped the main bunch they quickly organised themselves to share turns at the front of the group and ensure they were not caught by the bunch.
This leading group of 6 kept the pace high throughout the race and continued to extend their lead on the riders behind which gave them a comfortable advantage as they started the final lap. Anneliese attacked just before the top of the final climb into Modbury before the left turn into the finishing straight and such was her speed she crossed the line with a few seconds to spare on second placed Natalie Grinczer – Fusion Racing Team.
