On Sunday, 140 riders gathered in Rhoigos- South Wales to take part in the Ogmore Valley Wheelers 25 mile time trial. The course is renowned for producing fast time time’s but today’s event was not going to be that day.

In the early hours of the morning, road works were put up on the first 2.5 miles of the circuit meaning the course had been shortened to 22.5 miles. The main attraction of the day would be the battle between multi National champions Michael Hutchinson (In Gear /Train Sharpe RT), who’s the current competition record older of the distance (45:46) and Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com).

The first of the riders got underway, with a massive tale wind. Riders where hitting speeds of 50mph on the down hill section but a massive tail wind can only mean one thing, the return leg was going to be seriously hard! First rider to break 46 minutes was Justyn Cannon (Raf CA) 45:25, but minutes later this was battered down by in form rider Kieron Davies (Team NBCC) who clocked a very rapid 43:31.

With most riders safely home, Bottrill, took the start and was soon flying along the open road, reaching 10 miles in 16:06 – 37.3mph. It was clear Bottrill was on a mission and ready for the battle between himself and Hutchinson, but this was not meant to be with Hutch, a non starter having won the previous days Hampshire RC 10 mile TT.

Meanwhile, unaware of the situation Bottrill, was slicing his way through the field and pushed all the way to the line to clock a very rapid 42:20, and take win number 5. Once Bottrill, had recoveredhe expplained “It is pretty gutting to come all this way for the event to be shortened.”

“We got told on the way to the race that road works had been put on the course, but only had 30 miles left to travel but I’m glad I made the effort. I can now gauge my fitness, and start working towards my major goal of the a British National Championships.”

“What made today really special was having Isla, my eldest daughter watching. She told me on the way to the race I was her Super hero, and that I needed to win and to take her out for dinner, I could hardly let her down!”
