Report & Results – Youth Omnium at Welwyn (thanks Peter Waghorn)
Warm sunshine, zero wind and ideal conditions for the record number of 122 entries who had entered the Welwyn Youth Omnium – the first meeting of the South East series. The racing in the Youth A category was fast and furious in each of the five events. Frank Longstaff opened his account with 5th place in the 2 lap Time Trial but won the next four events to run out a worthy overall winner on 9 points. The battle for the next three places went down to the wire as they were only separated by a single point. Ethan Hayter won the Time trial – Fred Wright, Jack Plumley and Ethan Hayter fought out a close battle – Ethan won the tie break for second place having taken third spot in the points race.
The 12 Youth A girls resulted in some watchful tactics in the Scratch and Points events all watching each other as they slowly circled the track. Rachel Jary with three wins was the comfortable winner. The large entry of Youth B boys was dominated by Noah Ridgway- Brown, top places in all 5 events secured the victory by 6 points from his closest rival Max Cheatle. Two Welwyn Wheelers girls took the honours in the 13 strong Youth B girls category winning all five events between them. Millie Gage was the overall winner from training partner Josie Griffin.
The massive entry in the Youth C group of 25 boys produced some keen and competitive racing and was dominated by home rider Ollie Stockwell with consistent results and a runaway winner by 16 points from the two VC Londres riders Oscar Nilsson-Julien and Innes Harvey – battle will be rejoined at Herne Hill in two weeks time. Becky Surridge kept the VC Londres name alive in the Youth C Girls events winning overall from the two Welwyn riders Jenna Miles and Imogen Chastell.
The 10 riders in the Youth D/E group produced another Home Club winner in Max Jackson – 3 victories and a second spot in the points race for his first ever Omnium event. The whole multi- age and multi-event programme was completed in 6 hours in ideal warm conditions thanks to the hard working band of officials and the Chief Commisaire Trevor Reade
