Despite a far from ideal weather forecast, conditions remained dry for the 238 competitors who turned out at the NSC last Tuesday night for round 16 of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth League. The racing was very close in most classes as riders fought for the extra points that were on offer due to the absence of several of the regular frontrunners.

One of the most hotly contested finishes was in the born 2007 age group where Orry Lund outsprinted Rio Kelly to score his maiden win in the series. Archie Dunn eased ahead of fellow chaser Charlie Scarffe in the closing stages to snatch third and Cory Corkhill led the main bunch over the line for fifth. Jordan Carter, Jemma Quayle, Ben Davies, Olivia Quayle and Ellana Skillan completed the top ten.

Owen Collins was also a first-time victor in the born 2006 event, edging out breakaway partner Drystan Sewell in the dash for the chequered flag. Top girl Nicola Quaye took the sprint for third ahead of Samuel Devereau, Connor Moughtin, Tom Caine, Harry Callin and Rebecca Cooil, while Harry Eyres got the better of Tom Darnill in the run in for ninth. Imogen Cooper escaped from a group of seven riders to grab 11th and Thobert Kerruish got the verdict in the tussle for 12th.

Five riders broke away on the penultimate lap to contest the finish of the born 2005 category. Harry Kneen pipped top girl Mairi Harrison for the honours, with Oliver Corkish a close third ahead of Teddy Dunn and Frank Kinnish. James Scott led the rest of a splintered field home to round off the top six leader board.

James Devereau had to hold off a strong challenge from Dillon Dowson before securing the victory in the born 2004 class. Nathan Slack beat Ben Boyle and Kiera Prentice in the fight for third and Toby Craig kept Amy Quayle at bay for sixth place.

Percy Hampton came out on top in the five-man sprint that decided the outcome of the born 2003 & earlier grouping. Jonty Bregazzi was second, followed by Tyler Hannay, Matthew Cooil and Joseph Corkish in third, fourth and fifth respectively. Ryan Quirk outpaced Kyle Batty in the scrap for sixth.

In the born 2009 & later race Eddie Dillon returned from a two week break to notch up his twelfth win of the season, crossing the line well clear of Cameron Hounsell, who beat Kylan Murphy to the runners-up spot. Zach Jones had the edge on Jarno Davidson in the battle for fourth and Grace Wolstencroft was too quick for Florrie Thomas, Harrison Skillan and Dylan Bullock in the dart for sixth.

Maintaining his late challenge for the overall honours, Myles Le Geyt had a comfortable solo win in the born 2008 two lapper. Ollie Eyres led Oliver Cooper and the fast finishing T.J.Teare home for second, with Fearne Bregazzi taking the girls’ prize in a solid fifth place. Edward Field outgunned George Kinnish and Ryan Nelson in the gallop for sixth, while Ryan Batty ousted Leon Murphy in the bunch sprint for ninth. Newcomer Sonny Finch was an impressive 11th.

Emily Rewsin went from the gun in the novices class and was never caught. Tristan Speight, Carter Kneale, James Corlett and Jayjay Plowman rolled in separately to fill second to fifth places respectively and Max Messenger headed Abigail Cullington over the line to bag sixth. Evie Wright, Luke Pledger and Edward Hampson wrapped up the top ten.

In the very entertaining under 10 racing bikes Dillon Dowson produced his best performance of the year so far, outsprinting his six breakaway companions for a fine win. Cameron Dudley also produced a season’s best to take second in front of Drystan Sewell, Cian Jackson, Nathan Slack, Kiera Prentice and Harry Kneen. Mairi Harrison and Samuel Devereau were eighth and ninth, with Jack Sowerby spearheading the second group of riders home for tenth.

The under 12’s droppies ended in a sprint between a leading group of nine riders. Jonty Bregazzi started the action but was overtaken by James Harrison who took the win. Bregazzi salvaged second, with Aaron Lund coming through to grab third ahead of Jake Wilson, Tommy Skillicorn, Tyler Hannay, Percy Hampton, Matthew Cooil and Jack Christian.

Owen Dudley, Will Draper and Thomas Bostock showed a clean pair of wheels to the rest of a ten-strong leading group to fill the top three places on the under 16’s podium. Adam Kelly, Nathan Hinks and Daniel Scarffe completed the top six, with Kaitlin Slack taking the girls’ award in 12th position.
