Report – Isle of Man’s Youth League

Considering the prolonged spell of very wet and windy weather we have suffered recently, conditions were surprisingly good at the NSC last Tuesday night for the 315 competitors who signed-on for round five of the Team RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth Cycling League. Before the action got underway RL360’s Communications Executive Angela Gregory presented league organiser Dot Tilbury with the company’s sponsorship cheque for 2015.

In the novices class Liberty Delooze outsprinted Oliver Schofield, Joel Prentice and Norah Ellis to score her maiden win of the series. Isaac Stott overcame Jack Monaghan and Bella Rice in the race for fifth, with Abi Cullington and newcomer Dillon Kelly trailing in separately for eighth and ninth. Charlie Kneale overtook Matan Shani in the closing stages to grab the final place on the top ten leader board.

Brad Le Geyt surged ahead of Kylan Murphy to notch up his fourth success in the born 2010 & Later category. Dylan Bullock was a safe third and Daniel Minay led Hugh Osborn and Archie Mulholland home for fourth. Harrison Skillan and Stanley Kinnish were just behind in seventh and eighth positions, while leading girl Lula Kinnish pipped Conor Madsen-Mygdal for ninth.

Preserving his unbeaten record, Eddie Dillon edged out Jake Jones to take the honours in the born 2009 age group for the fifth week running. Thomas Pickavance ousted top girl Abi Clayton for third and Cameron Hounsell grabbed an unchallenged fifth ahead of Thomas Radcliffe and Matthew Hooper in sixth and seventh places. Jarno Davidson beat Grace Wolstencroft, Jonah Kenny and Zach Jones in the rush for eighth.

Alec Sorby dropped breakaway partner Myles Le Geyt on the final lap to bag maximum points and strengthen his overall lead in the born 2008 event. Freddie Griffin clipped off the front of the main chasing group to grab third and Fearne Bregazzi came from behind to outrun T.J.Teare in the battle for fourth. George Kinnish, Charlotte Geldart, Ryan Nelson, Bob Radcliffe and Joel Long rounded off the top ten.

Cian Howard went from the gun in the born 2007 race and time trialled to a clear solo victory. Orry Lund outgunned Rio Kelly, Florence Griffin and Charlie Scarffe in the gallop for second, with Jordan Carter keeping Cory Corkhill at bay for sixth. Harry Ellis had the edge on James Kinrade in the struggle for eighth and Ed Coole was too quick for Jemma Quayle and Ben Davies in the dart for tenth.

Three riders broke away on the opening lap of the born 2006 class and were never caught. At the finish Owen Collins powered ahead of fellow frontrunners Ivan Sorby and Drystan Sewell to secure the win. Tom Caine maintained fourth throughout and Nicola Quaye inched ahead of travelling companion Zachary Dowson to seize fifth. Rebecca Cooil came in alone for seventh and Samuel Devereau led Tom Darnill over the line for eighth. Jack Christian wrapped up the top ten.

Onchan’s Tyler Annis got the better of Frank Kinnish in the sprint at the end of the born 2005 three lapper. Harry Boyle lost contact with the two leaders on the final lap, finishing a safe third in front of a trio of chasers consisting of Chloe Dillon, Ella Griffin and Callum Salisbury.

In the born 2004 & earlier grouping Matthew Black took the honours in a closely fought battle with breakaway partners James Devereau and Shellan Leeming. Nathan Slack was a solitary fourth and Dillon Dowson ousted Kyle Batty, Kiera Prentice, Blae Cain, Emily Kinley and Mia Warren in the scrap for fifth.

There was a large field of 38 riders for the combined under 8 and under 10 racing bikes. A group of ten riders broke free and stayed together to the finish where Niall Colquitt outsprinted Owen Collins and Cian Howard for the number one slot. Cian Jackson, Drystan Sewell and Ivan Sorby completed the top six, with Mairi Harrison taking the girls’ prize in tenth place.

In the under 12 racing bikes Zac Walker and Matthew Cooil attacked at half-distance and worked hard together to build up what proved to be a race winning lead. At the finish Walker kicked hard on the finishing straight to take the win by two bike lengths. Cooil was a well-deserved second and Tommy Skillicorn topped Matthew Black, Jake Wilson, Jack Christian and Ralf Holden in the scramble for third. Kiera Prentice was the first girl in 11th position.

The under 16 racing bikes ended in a bunch sprint between thirteen riders with Conor Davies taking the honours for the second week in succession. Will Draper and Thomas Bostock were second and third a short distance ahead Adam Kelly, Ben Christian and Daniel Scarffe in fourth to sixth respectively. Eleanor Davies was the top girl in a very good seventh place.
