Liam Bromiley won the 60 mile Portsmouth North End Summer road race, powering across the line first in a bunch kick
Report/Result – Portsmouth NE Summer Road Race
from Graham Robins
Liam Bromiley of the University of Bath won the Portsmouth North End CC summer road race on the Owslebury course just north of Southampton. This was Liam’s third visit to the course finishing inside the top ten on the other two occasions.
The organising club put on the 60mile race on the rolling course with 7 ½ laps to be completed. The early morning neutralised section was under a heavy sky and mist but this soon burnt off leaving a warm mornings racing.
After the first full lap the bunch were still all together, but mid way through the second lap Robert Ormond (Fast Test RT) managed to grab a small lead but the peloton was quick to react on the long descent on the Longwood section and they pulled him back. Lap three saw the bunch still holding station.
At half race distance Bromiley made the first of his attacks as he quickly pulled out a lead of 18secs but he was soon reeled in and by the next lap we had Danny Axford (Arctic Tacx RT) with a large lead of over a minute over the bunch but in between were Richard Cartland (Team Boardman) and Harry Veale (Cycleworks.co.uk).
In the closing stages of the race Axford’s lead began to tumble while Cartland and Veale were swept up by the bunch. At the bell the race was pretty much all together with local rider Tom Morris (PNECC) leading the bunch past the Milburys pub and onto the final lap.
With a little more than two miles to go Bromiley came to the front and he lead the sprint up to the line winning the bunch kick just ahead of Thomas Scott-Collins (Wellingborough Cycle RT). … continued after advert
Liam Bromiley (to Eamon Deane) “Yes, it was a tough one, I was trying to get in moves all race, I sat in for the first two laps then I went, I got the third prime I think, I wanted to get a bit of money, pay for my entry. I tried to stay away and a group of 6 or 7 bridged across but the bunch were close.”
“When Danny Axford was away, everyone was chasing hard, it was flat out the whole way, so I sat in, about thirty guys back and recovered a bit. Three guys went on the descent to Owlsbury, they had a good gap but with 3km to goI could see them coming back, on the last little ramp I moved up the bunch, a few guys went so I sat on the wheels, got towed up and just hit them!! It was really tough, I had another guy with me, I told him “I will take you to the finish but don’t come round meâ€. I knew I would have the legs I have been working on my sprintâ€
