Team News: Flying start for Field at the National Trophy

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the Cyclo-Cross National Trophy in Derby” say Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s

The start line was awash with riders from the Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s team in almost every category. Huge crowds turned out for the opening round to watch riders tackle the fast and technical circuit featuring a sandpit and bridge section.

The men’s race, comprising elite and U23 riders, splintered early but by lap three it was Field who had taken the lead and went on to win. Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s now leads the National Elite Men’s category.

“That was a good start to the year,” said Field. “I didn’t mean to be at the front so early on, I don’t know what happened to Yorben, he seemed to sit up and go back to the chasing group. It was so windy out there and really hard work. The course was drying out. I started with the right tyres for the conditions for the first few laps and then I seemed to have too much tread on as the course dried out and it got really hard work”.

“I made sure I attacked going into the hurdles for the last time, I was there first and that gave me a little time going into the climb. Then when we came onto the road for the final sprint, Yorben’s chain came off, but I find it hard to believe he would have come round me.”

Derby may have played host to a pivotal moment in Women’s ‘Cross history too – The first ever podium held for the Junior Women’s category and our very own Amy Perryman standing on the 2nd step! Amy rode a very strong race and finished in 2nd place despite some fierce competition from six other women.

This is a category not yet formally recognised by British Cycling, despite there being a Junior Men’s category. The pressure is certainly mounting towards the cycling institution to recognise this women’s category and recognising the achievements of more young women competing in the sport.

In the Veteran Women’s race, Helen Patterson showed great form finishing in 3rd place. “Very happy with a solid start to the season but even happier to see a Junior Girls Podium. Now that’s progress”.

“Three podiums today, a very good start to the series for Hargroves Ridley Montezuma’s RT” said Pete Hargroves. The second round of the National Trophy takes place at the Abergavenny Leisure Centre at the end of October.

Wessex League North Hants Rd 4 Race Report
The youth racing for the day had large fields and some amazing racing, this set the scene for later races with Steve Davies racing in the Vet 50’s finishing 4th in a hotly contested race.

In a strong field of 37 the racing in the Women and Junior Women’s race was fast and frantic, Ella Freeman fought hard with Susan Parker and Caroline Goward, to win the Junior Women’s race and finish 7th overall. Charlotte Sampson racing in the senior category finished 10th (14th overall).

The Vet 40 and Junior race was always going to be interesting with a number of Vet’s back from the National Trophy at Derby and all fired up for it.

The first lap had a fast group leading the race with Paul Lloyd and Liam Sewell gaining a gap that was never closed. The chasing packs made up of Crispin Doyle, Harry Dridge and Joel Hawkins, followed by the next group including Fletcher Adams.

Lap by lap positions continued to change with Crispin Doyle pushing on to a solid 8th overall and 5th Vet. The Hargroves Junior’s continued to battle it out until Fletcher Adams attacked at the start of the last lap pulling away to be 4th Junior, with Harry Dridge taking 5th and Joel Hawkins 7th.
