News: Gold & Silver for GB at Track Worlds

Great Britain Cycling Team won a brilliant men’s team pursuit gold as the women’s squad took silver on day two of the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Ed Clancy, Kian Emadi and world championship debutants Charlie Tanfield and Ethan Hayter defeated Denmark by nearly two seconds in 3:53.389 for Britain’s first men’s team pursuit world title since 2012.

Elinor Barker, Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald and Emily Nelson were involved in superb dual with USA but lost out by 1.3 seconds to take silver in a time of 4:16.980.

The medals take Great Britain’s tally to three, one gold and two silver. “We seem to win Olympic medals more often than world championship medals, especially gold ones. I wanted this so bad,” six-time world champion Clancy said. “Ethan and Charlie have been two massive additions to the team here, they are really exciting prospects for the future.“

On the women’s team pursuit silver, Archibald said: “The day went…well silver is still good. “We did give a challenge, it was a competitive race, we stepped up I think. We’ve got a line of ways it could have gone better…with the form we had today I think that’s the best ride we could have done.”

Jack Carlin impressed in the keirin after his team sprint silver, winning in both the first round and second round to reach the final. There he just missed out on the medals, boxed in on the final lap to take fifth. In the women’s sprint, Katy Marchant exited in the 1/16 finals having qualified 15th fastest, while Chris Latham was 12th in the scratch race.
