The course

The 18.4kilometre race against the clock was fairly technical with the opening three kilometres featuring many twists and turns and a short but steep climb out of the town. The riders then faced lengthy continuous drag up to the nine kilometre mark, followed by a twisty fast decent and second short climb before heading down to the finish line.

Dylan van Baarle (Team Sky) set the early fastest time, stopping the clock with a time of 26minutes21 seconds and remained in the hot seat for a lengthy time until the final wave of riders came. The rain started to come down sporadically after the first 50 riders had started but with many more to come to road conditions continued to change.

Yates crossed the line with a time of 26 minutes 6 seconds, and moved into the race lead momentarily before the next rider Sergio Henao (Team Sky), went less than half a second faster to knock him off the top step. Chaves followed behind and stopped the clock with the same time, just 20th of a second faster than Yates and just 33seconds behind the stage winner Poels.

Esteban Chaves – 10th on the stage and overall – “It was the first time I have caught someone in a time trial so it was a good feeling. This was really good today, I am happy and I felt really good. I think this is the second time trial I have done well in, in my life, the other was in Burgos in Vuelta Espana 2015.”

“This is really good for me especially because it is only March, but it is no accident, we put in a lot of work in in the wind tunnel and on the bike so this is a really good step for me.”

“We have a really good option now Simon as our leader, but it is a big gap still 30 seconds or more to guys like Poels, so for sure we will try and we will see what happens.”
