2015 UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships

DAY 3, Monday 5th October | LIVE VIDEO: Finals & Podiums

SUMMARY
Three Golds each for the USA and Great Britain saw them top the table on day 3 of the 2015 UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships at the Manchester Velodrome, home to the Great Britain Cycling Team.

The day saw a mixture of bunch racing and races against the watch as well as some early rounds of sprinting in the 35-39 and 40-44 age categories. There was also a record attempt where Ainars Kiksis from Latvia set a new World Best for the 40 – 44 age category in the 500 metre standing start with a sizzling time of 32.839.

Winners are grinners! Chris Murray of Australia adds another gold to his collection.

Bunch Races
The day saw three Scratch races for the age categories 65 (men) and above over a distance of 5,000 metres or 20 laps of the track.

In the 75 Plus, James Kloss of the USA beat regulars from Britain at the World Masters, Roland Crayford and Brian Dacey into the minor places. The 70 – 74 category though saw a legend in British cycle sport, Geoff Cooke, winning his race ahead of Aussie Darrell Wheeler and Steffen Munch Hansen of Denmark.

The final bunch race was the 65 – 69 men where the Gold medal went to France after Gerard Louis Robert beat Britain’s Graham Weigh and Australia’s Malcolm Clasohm.

Race against the watch
In the Mens 50 – 54 time trial over 500 metres (2 Laps), there was an upset of sorts as the record holder from Australia (Geoff Stoker) saw his record come attack from Brian Abers of the USA whose 34.409 was a few thousandths shy of the world best time.

Stoker, the winner of the Sprint gold this year, meanwhile, had to settle for silver with another rider from the USA, Thomas Donohue in third.

The Aussies fought back in the 45-49 age category with Chris Murray of Australia breaking his own World Best for the 750 metres (3 Laps) with a time of 48.445 getting him the Gold medal. Second was Norway’s Joseph Santaniello whilst James Lawrence of the USA rounded out the podium.

Day 3 also saw some pursuiting where in the Mens 60 – 64 age category, Ian Humphreys of Great Britain was over a second quicker than silver medallist Ivan Colig of Australia in the final for Gold and Silver.

Steve Davies powers his Dolan bike to another World Masters medal in Manchester

In the Bronze medal ride off, the North East’s Steve Davies beat fellow Brit John Manning for the Bronze medal. The other Pursuit was for the 55 – 59 age category (men) where the USA had the top step of the podium after Russell Murphy USA with a time of 2.23.043 got the better of New Zealander Grant Tyrell (2.24.962).

The ride off for the Bronze medal was an all British affair with Graham Barclay getting the better of David Whitehall.

The day also saw some Team Pursiting in the Womens Open Team Pursuit competition where a British team called the ‘Dolphin Comando Squad’ (Madeline Moore, Melanie Sneddon, Janet Birkmyre) not only qualified fastest but also defeated the composite Irish/New Zealand team of Emerald Blacks (Susie Mitchell, Erin Criglington, Orla Hendron) for the Gold medal.

Happy Little Vegemites from Australia (of course) were third in a line up with Jessica Laws, Melinda Symon and Deborah Coulls.
