Round 8 of the Reading Track League ended under an incredible sunset at Palmer Park, but it started with the trackcycling 10 lap Scratch and it was Matt Gittings of AW Cycles who came round Louis Magnani of Prestige Velo coming off Turn 4 to take the opening win of the night in the Senior A race with Trevor Bradbury of AW Cycles taking third.
In yet another photo-finish between Josh Mitchell of Bicester Millennium and Tom Sefton of Palmer Park Velo it was Mitchell who took the Senior B win with Sefton’s team mate Matt Lansley taking third and Abbie Dentus of Team De Ver taking the Ladies’ honours.
After the Sprint Heats, attention turned to the Youth Individual Pursuit Championship where Anthony Anderson of Kingston Wheelers took victory by half a second ahead of Palmer Park Velo’s Sam Harding. Harry Bodgener, also from the home club, was third with team mate Emma Clarke the fastest of the Girls.
Before the Sprint Finals there were a pair of Points Races and it was Gittings again taking the Senior A win from Nick Abraham and Stephen Bradbury of PCT Tomacc. Mitchell out-scored Sefton to take the Senior B race with Mark Shepherd third for Banjo Cycles.
Gittings run of wins came to an end when Joe Truman of i-Team CC took the win in the Senior A Sprint – the AW Cycles rider having to settle for second ahead of Stephen Bradbury. And Mitchell, too, had to content himself with second place in the Bs after Hugh Knudsen took the win – Dan Lansley taking third for AW Cycles.
Gittings was back on top in the Unknown Distance, though with Matt Lansley the best placed B rider. Then, as the sun started to set and the sky turned to red and orange, the AW Cycles 20k Endurance race unfolded at a frantic pace with a group of nine riders tearing up the track until it started shedding riders in the closing stages.
Stephen Bradbury had the legs to take the final win of the evening ahead of run-away 20k Series leader Nick Abraham with young Joe Fry third. Shepherd took another Senior B win ahead of Knudsen and Nick Cammell of GS Henley whose challenge in the final sprint was somewhat hampered by what looked like a very painful attack of cramp.
