Bevis Takes Series Grand Finale

The final round of the Leisure Lakes Circuit Series brought electrifying cycle racing to the home of national hunt racing, Cheltenham racecourse. The fast and furious 40km criterium race took place in hot and dry conditions, in front of a large enthusiastic crowd.

Over 35 riders took to the start line, including NFTO race team who had travelled from Hereford for the event. Their team included in-form Ryan Bevis who had recently taken a fine 3rd place overall in the 6-stage Ras De Cymru in Wales.

The hilly racecourse circuit and hot conditions put all riders under pressure in the early stages of the race. A strong group were able to establish a good lead after only 20 minutes of fast racing though, touching speeds in excess of 30mph. Bevis and his teammate, Ewen McDonald, who had taken a fine 2nd place at the series a week before, pulled hard at the front to ensure the remaining peloton stayed at bay.

Cheltenham based rider, Richard Cleaver (Leisurelakesbikes.com), had also made the leading group and was keen show the crowd how strong he currently is, putting in attacks off the front as the leaders passed the finish each lap. Mike Ward (Ride 24/7) played a marking game and covered any aggressive moves strongly to ensure he stayed fresh for the finish.

As the race entered it’s final stages, it was clear that the leading group of 5 riders had succeeded in staying clear of the chasing pack. Back in the pursuing peloton, Stow based Matt Ullmer (Dynamic Bicycles UK/RPC), was keen to put on a show for his family who were watching, as he attacked in the dying stages of the race in a brave attempt to jump across to the leaders. His efforts, unfortunately, came to nothing and he was swallowed up by the main bunch.

As the lead group left the final chicane at the foot of the finish climb, Bevis used his teammate, McDonald, to great advantage before sprinting clear of his rivals a take an emphatic win in front of the exuberant racecourse crowd.

Cirencester based Ward of Ride 24/7 took 2nd, while Bevis’ teammate McDonald was rewarded with a 3rd placing to round out the top 3. A special mention goes to Pat Alexander who took a fine 10th place for Cheltenham and County CC.

Velo Club Montpellier and Cheltenham and County Cycling Club would like to thank Leisure Lakes Bikes Cheltenham, Cheltenham racecourse and C&G Scaffolding for making this event possible.
