News – Course record for Bottrill

Saturday afternoon, the hottest day of the year hit the East Midlands. With hardly any wind and high temperatures, it would be a great day for racing and 90 riders gathered in the small town of Etwall (Derbyshire) to tackle the Mercia CC 30 mile time trial.

The current competition Record of 55:39 set by Micheal Hutchinson would be the the target for the seeded riders and a course record of 57:44 would also be under threat with the quality of the field.

First rider underway was at 3pm, and the time’s already being posted was an indication that the it was going to be a fast day. There would be just three riders to break the hour barrier for the distance. The first was Matthew Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) with 59:09. This was then beaten by inform Matthew Clinton (Mike Vaughn Cycles). Clintons ride was so quick, he broke the course record in the process 57:37, which would make his ride the 5th fastest time ever ridden on UK roads.

With the majority of the field now home, it was left to Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) to see if he could break the competition record of 55:39. With some hard lumpy roads on the Doveridge section of the course it would be a hard task.

Bottrill, was soon in his stride and just inside 20 minutes for the first 10 miles, but now hitting full gas. Bottrill, was in overdrive pushing the Giant Trinity SL Advance tt machine all the way to finish line in a very rapid 56:15. Not enough for the competition record but a massive 1:29 of the course record.

After the finishhe explained “Yes, I’m made up with the time. It was always going to be hard to break the competition record on this course with the leg up to Doveridge; its such a hard road. But I’ve still ridden at 32 mph for 30 miles which is pretty special.”
