SUMMARY

Two of the Men’s sprint competitions were concluded with Gold for Ethan Boyes of the USA in the 35 – 39 age category who defeated France’s Arnaud Duble in the final three rides to one. The Bronze went to Finnish rider Lauri Arte who saw off the challenge from the USA’s Alvin Cobb.

In the next age category, former World Junior sprint champion when the event was held in Britain in 1990, Ainars Kiksis of Lativia won the 40–44 age category. Kiksis also has two European titles to his name during his racing days against the World’s best and his class was easy to see in the Masters competition.

The Latvian rider beat Aussie Michael Smith in the final whilst Italian Alessandro Picco won the Bronze medal in the ride off against Keith Bryceland of Great Britain.

There was more Sprint action on day 4 but this time in the form of racing against the watch with three time trials for the 65 and over riders. Gerard Louis Robert of France won the 65 – 69 age group with Steven Troseth (USA) a few hundredths slower in second and Angelo Onofri (Italy) a tenth back in third.

There was a British winner in the 70 – 74 age category as Geoff Cooke (above), a former Commonwealth Games champion on the Tandem, saw off the challenge of former Tandem partner David Rowe with another British rider, Peter Herbert, in third.

The final time trial was for the 75 plus riders and saw James Kloss (USA) come out on the top step of the podium from Roland Crayford and Alan Rowe (GBR) in third.

In more racing against the watch, the Men’s Pursuit for the 50 – 54 category over 2000m (8 Laps) was won by Pascal Montier of France who edged out Italian Luciano Pasquini in the final for the Gold and Silver. Mark Wiffen of Great Britain was third in another hard fought battle with Italian Roberto Dardi.

Bunch Racing

Day 4 saw plenty of bunch race action and in the Men’s Scratch Race (45 – 49) Daniel Casper of the USA beat Aussie Matthew Glanville and Frenchman Aderito Da Cruz to the line first to win the Gold. In the Womens Scratch Race (35 – 44) over 5Km, Louise Haston of Great Britain won the race overall and the 35 – 39 age category. Two sets of medals were awarded with Silver in the 35 – 39 going to Christelle Ribault (FRA) and the Bronze, Carolien Van Herrikhuyzen (NED).

In the 40 – 44 category, Erin Criglington of New Zealand was presented with the Gold with Silver for Cheryl Fuller Muller of the USA and Susie Mitchell of Ireland the Bronze. The Womens Scratch Race for 45 – 49 was won by Janet Birkmyre (GBR) from fellow Brit Julie Cooper. Francine Haas of the USA was third.

The Women’s Scratch Race for 50 Plus was won by Janni Bormann of Denmark and she was presented with the Gold medal in the 50-54 age category. Deborah Coulls (Aus) finished with the silver medal and Jayne Paine of Great Britain the Bronze.

In the 55 – 59 category, the Gold went to Christine Higgs of Great Britain with Elizabeth Heller of the USA the Silver and Meg Mautner, also of the USA, the Bronze. The final set of medals from that race was in the 60 Plus category and Arja Scarsbrook of Finland won the Gold from Brenda Tate (GBR) and Ilna Lemmer (South Africa).

Finally but certainly not least, former World Scratch Race Silver medallist in 2002, Tony Gibb, made an appearance at the Masters Championships with a victory in the Men’s Points Race for 35 – 39 aged riders. Emmanuel Vignard of France was second and his compatriot Julien Muselet in third.
