Q& A: Barnabas (Barney) Purbrook

How did you get into cycling?
Barney: After I finished playing semi-pro rugby, I took up triathlon with my wife. I was rubbish at swimming and running so turned my focus to the bike.

Which disciplines are the focus?
Barney: Road racing although I would like to do some TTs this season.

Do you have to mix work with racing?
Barney: I work for an Asset Manager in the city of London. It can be a bit of a challenge getting in the hours alongside work but I’m lucky to have an understanding coach and boss!

What was the first race of 2017?
Barney: First race was a round of the Imperial Winter Crit Series at Hillingdon.

How did that first race go?
Barney: It was fun to get back into racing after the off season training. I spent the race trying to get a break going but without success. I then worked for my teammate, who won the whole series, in the last few laps coming in with the peloton.

What is your race bike?
Barney: A Cannondale Super 6 Evo Hi-Mod team bike. It’s a fantastic machine and as a first time rider of Cannondales, I’m a definite convert.

What are the season goals
Barney: I’m looking forward to taking on the National Bs throughout the season with the team, particularly the Victor Berlemont in August. I’d like to retain my Elite license and get on some podiums at Nat Bs.

Best piece of kit?
Barney: I’m a huge fan of the new Mavic Ltd edition yellow shoes. They look great with the Nuun-Sigma Sport-London kit.

How could the sport be improved?
Barney: I think British cycling could do more to promote and highlight the complete range of racing that exists across the UK. The website could publish results and notify members of local races.
