News: Wout van Aert Training in Tenerife

Wout van Aert base training in Tenerife & losing weight from CX season

World star on the road and in cyclocross, Wout van Aert is currently on Tenerife to prepare for the start of his road campaign. Marc Lamberts, performance coach at Jumbo-Visma and personal trainer at Van Aert, says that his star rider still has some work to do.

“I had hoped that Wout would come to Tenerife with a slightly broader base,” Lamberts tells Het Laatste Nieuws. “I’m not going to dramatize that as Wout’s level is good, but we need to improve. He is currently good enough to compete in finals, but not to win. That’s what we’re here for now.”

Van Aert has had a busy period, both on and off the bike. The Belgian rode a lot of cyclocross races in the winter, while at the beginning of January he also became the father of a son named George. Van Aert had to end his training camp in Alicante early in January in order to be with his wife Sarah.

“Wout will be in Tenerife from February 8 to March 1 and he has to work a little harder to start the Spring classics in top form. There is still some work to do. Van Aert is currently two kilos too heavy, as he has gained a lot of muscle mass again during the cyclocross winter. And you don’t just get that off,” says Lamberts. “Two kilos makes 15,000 kilo/calories. That is a lot and takes time. We will also take that time. Little by little we are reducing his weight.”
