Last weekend, Ian Field and Nick Barnes made the trip to Heusden-Zolder, Belgium for the UCI Cyclo-cross World championships. It was one of the most exciting and eventful races of season. Ian was planning for a super fast race but with unprecedented amounts of rain through the weekend conditions were actually a lot tougher and slower than anyone had predicted. The sandy soil handled the rain well and despite the rain the course was still in great condition come race day.

We caught up with Ian after race who had this to say… “I made one of my best starts of the season and was sitting in 18th after one lap of racing. I felt super strong on the steep climbs and descents but after the first lap quickly realised the aerobic fitness simply wasn’t there to hold on to that top 20 position. After a long season of racing almost every weekend my legs were running out of gas. I dug in and rode a smooth mistake free race which was important as others around me made mistakes left, right and centre…”

“…I finished the race with nothing left and in 28th position 4mins and 4secs off the flying Wout van aert. This sort of time gap placed me 21st just twelve months ago in Tabor. This just highlights the ever growing strength in depth and the fierce competition at Elite level cross in Europe.”

Ian’s now taking a break from training and racing but is already planning ahead for next season. “Having defended my trophy series with 5 out of 5 race wins, 27th overall in the World Cup series a top 30 at World Champs and a top 15 at the Koppenberg Cross this season has been a super consistent one.”
