Feature Report: Ryedale Grand Prix Mens

Oli Wood won a nailbiting sprint against Matt Holmes of Madison Genesis  with Graham Briggs in third place in the Ryedale Grand Prix on Sunday

After a brutal final lap of the Ryedale Grand Prix circuit, only a select group of riders were left to sprint out the win and from that group, Olli Wood grabbed his chance at the biggest road race victory of his career so far, snatching it from Matt Holmes of Madison Genesis with Graham Briggs in third.

The race began with the usual flurry of attacks and when Tom Moses and James Lowsley-Williams opened up a gap, the peloton chase was on and off for a while before they decided to let the duo go and the gap soon opened to over five minutes. This remained for most of the big loops before Madison Genesis and One Pro upped the pace and started to reel them in. James Lowsley-Williams soon blew his doors off and dropped back looking very empty as he came through the finish well down on the lone leader Tom Moses.

The legs were soon getting itchy in the peloton as riders were eager to race on whilst others wanted to keep control. The final few laps were very active indeed and the circuits main climb saw the peloton split to pieces and when there was a resemblance of a regrouping on the 50mph descent, it was a much smaller peloton,. A former winner Richard Handley of Madison Genesis was one rider who was pictured off the front of a slimmed down peloton.

One the final lap, a small group escaped but with only a handful of seconds, it was touch and go whether they would stay away but this they did and Team Wiggins, with two in the move, won the day thanks to Ollie Wood’s effort to just get over the line ahead of Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis) with Graham Briggs showing what a solid rider he is on the road with third.

The mens race got underway at 2pm with the usual quality present for a race of this stature

In the series jersey was Jonny McEvoy of Madison Genesis

The peloton cruising, not bothered  by the leaders opening up a gap until they realised it was over five minutes

So the hammer went down so to speak and they started the chase but the hammer was still to start nailing riders to the road

Tom Moses was left alone out front for a few laps of the small circuit

And then with the bell lap starting, former winner Richard Handley of Madison Genesis took flight

The final podium, Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis), Ollie Wood, and Graham Briggs
