About Eddie Soens
Whilst a successful pre-war competitor, Eddie Soens will be remembered mostly for his unrivalled success as a coach, mentor and manager to a succession of National, Commonwealth and World champions over several decades in the cycling world.

Perhaps the better recalled names include Norman Sheil (twice world pursuit champion), John Geddes, Olympic & world medallist and National Champion; Stan Brittain, National Champion and successful international roadman; Canadian Gordon Singleton, World Keirin champion and record holder. Dave Lloyd, prolific national champion and time trial winner. Barry Hoban in his early amateur days, along with Charly McCoy and Joe McLean for the 1960 Olympic team pursuit.

British top sprinter Paul McHugh was his final pupil. Other national and international champion names become too numerous to mention but one must not forget Harry Middleton with his leading time trial successes. The Eddie Soens Memorial race started off as the Eddie Soens Cycles criterium in 1962 being run around an open road circuit in Bickerstaff, Lancashire and promoted by the then Melling Wheelers.

Over the years this moved to today’s enclosed Aintree race course motor circuit and, after Eddie died in August 1985, it became the memorial event, attracting national riders of the highest quality. Winners internationally recognised include Steve Cummings, Tour de France rider & UK national Champion and Ed Clancy, multiple Olympic gold medallist.
