Mountbatten Circuit Races 1 | Sunday, 16th February

By Graham Robins

Justin Hoy (Felt Colbornes-Hargroves RT) got his season underway with a win at the first race of the season at the Mountbatten track in Portsmouth. Justin was in a select group of five riders who managed over the race distance to get two laps up and then he won the bunch sprint.

The E/1/2 race was a sixty minute plus five laps held in nice sunshine on half the circuit. It was a little chilly and there was no wind to speak of. Straight away Rowan Horner (VC ST Raphael) made a quick start stretching out the field into one long line, but the lead only lasted a couple of laps as the rest organised a chase and pulled him back.

There were several attacks over the next few laps until five riders eased away from the bunch to form a group that soon caught the tail of the bunch going one lap up. The group contained Justin Hoy, Jason Streather (VC St Raphael), Mitchell Webber (Pedal Heaven), Richard Phillips Scofield (Peter Hansford Racing) and Simon Brooks (VC St Raphael).

The leading group then carried on through the bunch and in doing so collected five more on the way out. And quickly this enlarged group of now ten riders again lapped the field meaning we now had five riders at two laps and five riders at one lap up on the bunch.

The five at one lap were Joseph Donohue, Dave Dalton and Henry Newbury from Fareham Wheelers, Albert Ellison (VC Meudon) and Rowan Horner.

At this point, the race was done and all that was left was for the sprint for the places which Justin finished off by leading out the sprint and winning by a couple of seconds.

There was a women’s race of forty minutes and three laps which was won by Bonnie van Wilgenberg (Zappi’s Racing Team) who managed to get a lap up on the rest. Along with Bonnie, Ruby Chappell (Behind The Bikeshed) and Sophia Joy (Felt Colbornes Hargroves RT) got clear of the bunch after only five minutes of racing.

These three women slowly built up a lead until an incident brought Sophia down and then Ruby slipped back to be collected by the bunch leaving Bonnie clear and she soon made the junction to the back of the others and stayed in there until the end of the race.

Ruby won the bunch sprint taking second place with Hannah Cannell (VC Londres) third.

The third cat race saw a group of five riders get a gap over the bunch and work away at increasing it until slowly one by one they dropped away leaving just three riders clear at half the race distance over.

The race was fifty minutes plus 3 laps but was nearly all over by half distance when the three riders Duncan Lancashire (Andover Wheelers), Charlie Leed (Southampton Uni RC) and Shaun Smart (Southdown Velo) looked set for the victory. Shaun faded towards the end of the race leaving Charlie to take the win ahead of Duncan.
