Top 10/Report: Allen Valley Velo 2 Stage Hill Climb

Allen Valley Velo held their annual 2-Stage hill climb in Whitfield, Northumberland on Sunday. The organisers found a touch of ground frost on arrival at the HQ, but fortunately the temperatures had lifted by the time the first riders set off; giving sunny, cold conditions, but with a steady north-westerly breeze.

Stage 1, MH16 was 4 miles long with an average gradient of 4% – a long threshold type effort, made all the more difficult with headwinds on the upper sections.

Stage 2, MH15 was 1.1 miles, with the average gradient is 7%, but touching 20% in the first sections. The changing gradients make it a difficult one to pace, especially on the tight hairpin at the bottom of the climb.

The overall event was won by Zeb Kyffin of Ribble Pro Cycling in a combined stage time of 16:25.3, setting a new course record on stage 2 in the process. Zeb has only recently returned to action after breaking his collarbone a couple of months ago. Zeb said “After recovering from the collarbone smash and subsequent surgery, I thought that doing hill climb season would be a great way to end the season”.

Hannah Farran of Boompods EDCO NRG won for the ladies in a combined time of 22:16.1. Hannah said “Overall, I’m really pleased with the way things went today The first climb was a lot steadier – long and gradual – but I really enjoyed it as I felt that I could just sit in and ride to power. The second climb was a bit more of a fight!”.
