Sigma Sports-Cannondale Race Team, one of the UK’s longest-running amateur cycling teams, has this week confirmed its return for the 2022 season with a new name, whilst staying true to its core values – riding and racing across multiple disciplines while balancing busy lives off the bike.
Established in 2012 by Cameron Fraser, the London-based team has been a regular sight at road, track and time trial events across the for the past decade. For 2022, the UK’s leading multi-sports retailer Sigma Sports and US bicycle brand Cannondale have taken joint title sponsorship of the team, building on their long-standing involvement.
Despite a change of name, the roster and focus of the team remains consistent with just a few moves. Long-standing team manager Cameron Fraser has stepped back following a move to Scotland for a key role in delivering the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, retaining his spot as a team rider but passing the reins to Craig McLean who steps up into the team principal role.
“We’re once again proud to be rolling out for yet another season with the continued support from some of the most recognised names in not just the UK but cycling internationally,” explained McLean before the team head to Mallorca for training camp this week. “We’re proud to continue riding the best bikes in the business with Cannondale, across road, MTB, track, time trials and gravel too. Our focus will continue to diversify with the traditional road races, both here and some international races too, sitting alongside track, gravel and mountain bike racing in both senior and masters categories. We’re excited to get back together now and get the season started.”
Sigma Sports founder, Ian Whittingham said: “We think it’s important to continue to support bike racing at grass roots, as we have a lways done, and love the fact the team has spread into racing in all disciplines much in the same way our shop has diversified its products over the years.” Newly appointed CMO for Sigma Sports, Alex Hodge added: “We are looking forward to sharing the stories behind why the guys race as a great example of how their passion for cycling meets racing performance.”
Alongside support from Sigma Sports and the Cannondale bikes, the team will continue to receive support from Saddleback and its range of performance brands, specifically Castelli, Enve, HJC, Sidi and Stages. Oakley stays onboard as the team’s eyewear partner, while AMS continue their support as the team vehicle, rider support and content partner. Finally, Trainsharp remains as coaching support and Chiro.London as the well-being partner. “We’d also like to say a huge thanks to Nuun for their hugely valuable support over the past 10 years, helping to define the team as it is today,” added team principal McLean.
The roster drops to 10 riders for this season as Ken Buckley moves on, while support continues from Max Knott, team mechanic, and Chris Halls in a team support role. The full rider line-up is as follows:
— Edmund Bradbury
— Cameron Fraser
— George Gori
— David Hewett
— Richard Mardle
— Craig McLean
— Chris McNamara
— James Moss
— Barnabas Purbrook
— Lee Smith
