TEAM REPORT: JUNIOR MEN’S CICLE CLASSIC – PROLOGUE RACING TEAM
“Round 1 of the Junior National Series, the epic CiCLE Classic with its off road Roubaix / Strade Bianche type sectors lived up to its billing” says the team.

Nathan Smith in the lead group of four with a lap to go

“In atrocious conditions, within the first 15 miles of the 63 mile Race, it was hectic and all team cars were busy in the convoy. By the first passing of Somerberg, it was chaos with Joel, Joe and Dan all having mechanicals. Frantic changes and chasing was to be the theme of their day.

Meanwhile, Nathan (Smith) stayed out of trouble and bided his time in the front group. An epic chase from Joel aided by Joe and Dan who did all they could before more crashes and more mechanicals, saw him within touching distance of the leaders but unable to bridge but never stopped fighting.
Come the last passing of Somerberg, the final sector with a steep climb, Nathan held second wheel when the race split whittling it down to four riders.

Nathan, eventual winner Aharon Dick, Luca Bednarek and Miles Mcintosh. The gap grew up to 45 seconds once onto the finishing circuit however, with little more than 5k to go more bad luck was to plague the team when Nathan clipped a pedal on a fast corner. Dispatched by the three leaders, he gave an epic chase with two other riders and was able to rejoin but left with little to contest the sprint at the end but held on for a brilliant 6th place.
A brilliant ride and a massive team performance from parent helpers and riders alike and not forgetting the brilliant organisers who certainly put on a show. It was an epic day of carnage but one the team and especially Nathan can be incredibly proud of.
