This weekend: National Trophy Ipswich

Next weekend, Ipswich is looking forward to hosting the final round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross in the new year, the week before the championships in the North East

“Trinity Park (Ipswich) provides us a fantastic venue to host the final Round of the National Trophy” says Steve Grimwood, the organiser. “We know it’s one of the flattest courses on the circuit but to say it was easy would be wrong”.

“The flatter course lends itself to bunch racing where the riders are racing each other and having to really think about where they can get an advantage. It can be a very tactical race and last year was exceptional though. It was early season and 17 degrees and the average speed was off the scale.”

With the race in the first week of January, the weather could be a big factor. The forecast is overall quite good for the coming week with a little rain and Steve explained that should it be wet, the circuit will be transformed. “The surface at Trinity is about three inches of topsoil on top of sand so even the slightest bit of rain, turns all the corners into an ice rink with heavier rain providing some really heavy going.”

By way of example, Steve added “at a league race last year, lap times went from six minutes to fifteen minutes during the race!” A common scenario however is frost at that time of the year. “If it’s frosty” says Steve, “then staying upright will be a challenge to all”.

Steve then explained that after last year, they have taken onboard the feeedback and some of the course around, shortening both road sections that link the 4×4 area and the Barn by half, and have moved the pits to the centre of the course.

The finish line now comes immediately after a more technical indoor Barn section and the technical area on the Circus field which will have two 40cm hurdles. So instead of a long sprint finish on the road, the course will also feature a bridge of identical design to the one used at Derby this year which will undoubtedly provide some ‘Tail Whip’ photo opportunities.

Being the final round and only a week before the Nationals at Hetton Park in the North East, means Ipswich will provide an ideal opportunity for riders to test their legs before the championship race and so the organisers are expecting many a ‘new’ face to turn up for that last big hit out.

“Using this venue in the run up to the National Champs is ideal” says Steve, “as it gives riders of all categories a chance to race and fine tune their form with a fast leg spinner and lung opener event without the risk of a heavy leg sapping day out.”

The venue is without doubt one of the best in the country to promote #cross with unlimited parking adjacent to the course, on site unlimited Motorhome parking, overnight Toilet and Showers, three mens & women’s toilet blocks & showers, an indoor course section & Trade Barn, Water supplies all round the course & all in a secure environment. This, added to the further course improvements this year should make for a great day!

Steve added “We are all set for a fantastic race here in Ipswich. We have 475 Entries which is fantastic.  We had a race here on New Years Day and everyone loved the course, It’s fast and flowing, and at the moment it’s still dry. One of the biggest factors to expect looking at the forecast is vicious head winds which will make for tactical and tough racing. The 4 x 4 area has been tweaked, The Barn is in and will give some brief shelter, The Bridge is ready & the Mud Mound is waiting to trap any over confident riders.”

The event is supported by Trinity Park & it’s Chairman David Nunn who will be joined by the Mayor of Ipswich Cllr Sarah Barber on the day for Podium Presentations. Event Sponsors Renvale & Travers Bikes will also join us on Stage. Expect a Fun Course, a great local crowd and lots of local support from the fantastic fan base that has built up over the many years of National & International Cyclo Cross in Ipswich.

The only thing out of the organisers control will be the weather and Steve has one last request. “How about a dusting of snow?” How about it indeed… would make for seasonal pictures for sure … VeloUK will be there just in case it does ;-)

RIDERS

The rider list for Ipswich is packed with star riders one week before the British Championships.

The Women’s racing sees some interesting names on the start sheet and one that is truly exciting is Evie Richards who won a round of the Women’s World Cup and is a former Under 23 World Champion. Evie will be joined by series leader Bethany Crumpton on her special yellow Boardman Bike along with other riders who have spent the Xmas period in Belgium racing, Anna Kay, Amira Mellor, Sophie Thackray, and Xan Crees. Other favourites to look for are Sophie Wright, a truly exciting talent for the future, multiple winner in the series already Ffion James and Hannah Payton.

Evie Richards winning a world cup CX race recently…. one of the most exciting riders on the planet…

In the Veteran Women’s race, the two leading contenders, Kate Eedy and Maddie Smith are back as is new world champion Helen Pattinson of Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s. The Junior Men’s race sees series leader Cameron Mason lining up along with Jenson Young, Lewis Askey and a winner here and in Europe this season, Ben Tulett. That race will no doubt see many others in that mix especially if the course is running fast.

The final race of the day will see Ian Field of Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s racing after winning the series in Bradford and a win in Ipswich is no certainty with a strong line up to challenge him. Grant Ferguson who rode so well at Bradford is back, as is a winner already at Ipswich, the exciting to watch Yorben Van Tichelt.

Another name is Liam Killeen and hopefully we’ll see him on the start whilst Jeremy Durrin has been in the mix and was a winner last weekend so is a candidate for the podium. But they had all better keep an eye on Braam Merlier who has found racing in Britain to his liking with a number of victories already. Paul Oldham and David Fletcher should also be challenging for a place at the front as could Daniel Tulett, Billy Harding, and Roel Van Der Stegen.

Winner of the last two rounds for the Elite Men, Braam Merlier

The racing kicks off on the Sunday with Nick Craig in the Vet 40s having sewn up the Veteran’s category but keeping him honest in that race will be Ian Taylor and Neil Ellison who have both had great dices with Craig during the series.

The Veteran 50 is probably one of the best prospects for a close race with Pete Middleton and Tim Davies both giving each other a tough battle in each round and then throw into that mix off road legend Tim Gould and its race on!

The Under 16 Girls should be a win for Millie Couzens who has dominated the category in the series but on this course, all sorts of surprises could come from at least half a dozen other riders who are in the mix at the front of races including Anna Flynn. The Under 14 girls is perhaps one of the closest fought with the likes of Zoe Backstedt, Grace Lister, Anoushka Minale and Ella Maclean-Howell.

The Under 16 Boys sees series leader Oliver Stockwell wearing number 1 but again, these categories are so closely fought over with so many possible winners in Alex Gregory, Daniel Barnes, Jamie Johnston, Emile Alexander, Finlay Pickering and Joe Pidcock just some of the possibilities. Likewise the Under 14s where the series has seen so many different winners picking one for Ipswich is a lottery. Joshua Tarling, Ben Askey and Griff Lewis are the high flyers in the series but in championship week, who knows what surprises will come to the front.

Will we see snow at Ipswich… the forecast isn’t playing ball so probably not. Here Cameron Mason wins the Junior mens race at Bradford
