Men’s Race

Stage 1 of the Men’s Tour of Reservoir was not the controlled race it could have been with a break of 10 forcing a reaction from behind and that created carnage in the peloton with the race spread out all round the course with Derwent Reservoir at its heart. A group of 26 riders contested the finish and from that Ollie Wood held off Jacob Scott and last years winners from Madison Genesis, Tom Moses.

It was ‘very active’ – to quote the words of race radio – start of the race with moves of all shapes and sizes going off the front and then being brought back. Steve Lampier (Saint Piran) and Angus Fyfe (Ulster Cycling) were one of the many to make a break off the front. Felix Barker (ActiveEdge Racing Team) was another.

The big move of the day went after 12 miles when ten riders broke clear – Chris Latham, Jordan Peacock, Erick Rowsell, Will Bjergfelt, Scott Auld, Callum MacLeod, Damien Clayton, Ben Healy, Adam Kenway and Ben Hardy. With Kenway going for the KoM points and the break’s lead gaining as much as nine minutes, there had to be a reaction from behind.

And so there was with the likes of James Shaw, Ali Slater, Matt Holmes, Max Stedman and others putting the hammer down and the race behind them split to pieces on the lumpy roads in Northumberland. Second time up the main climb out of Edmundbyers, you could see all the little groups forming behind the chase group which had reduced the lead of the breakaway to four minutes at that point.

The chase group of 16 riders, made even more time on the descent of the climb and when they went through the finish line with two laps of the smaller circuit to go, the gap was less than a minute. The speed in the break to stay away saw three riders dropped but they were picked up by the chasers and when the race came together, the lead group was 26 strong with teams like Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK, Canyon DHB and SwiftCarbon having five riders each in the group.

The chase group that caught the front was Jacob Scott, Zeb Kyffin, Thomas Mein, Mark Christian, Chris McGlinchey, Ali Slater, Ollie Wood, Dylan Kerfoot-Robinson, Max Stedman, Matt Holmes, Tom Moses, James Shaw, Matt Bostock, Dan Pearson, Joe Evans and Ed Laverack.

Fireworks was expected on those final laps but none of any significance came as riders were happy to leave it the uphill sprint where Ollie Wood took the victory.

Women’s Report

The Women’s stage 1 was won by Rebecca Durrell who won the up hill sprint‏ into the Reservoir grounds from Pfeiffer Georgi and Anna Kay, three of the strongest riders in the race.

The race began with the usual array of attacks like the one from Katie Scott and Chanel Mason. The latter was caught after ten miles had passed under the wheels but more riders followed off the front including a break from Claire Steels (Brother UK Fusion RT) and Niamh Fisher-Black (Torelli-Assure-Madison).

Whilst there were no significant moves off the front, there were plenty of riders going backwards on lap two of the Reservoir and then even more as the race went over the big climb out of Edmundbyers. Pfeiffer Georgi and Anna Kay were noticeable at the front trying to split the race but the still sizable peloton led the way.

Whilst the temperatures were dropping, the number of willing attackers was not but with so many in the that lead group, 25 or more, none of the little breaks were sticking and the stage was decided on the climb up to the finish where Rebecca Durrell, winner of the Lincoln GP for the second time was just to quick for the young Pfeiffer Georgi.
