Saturday 10th June
Jack Beezer (Arbis-Colbert) overcame the horrible weather conditions the win the 2014 running of this very popular one day two stage race based in Meonstoke just north of Southampton. The 24 year old rider from Mile End East London won the prologue and then finished second in the road race to win by 30secs.

The morning starts with a four mile prologue time trial on a course this winds its way up Old Winchester Hill, it’s a short TT but it climbs all the way from start to finish. The afternoon sees the riders switch to the other side on the Corehampton down to tackle the Milburys course a distance of sixty nine miles making a total race distance of seventy three miles. The TT was run in damp conditions but all around the course it was very windy. The road race in the afternoon saw some of the worst weather seen for a long time as squally rain mixed with hail and heavy wind meant that only 18 of the original 69 starters finished on the same lap with many riders retiring of suffering punctures.

The morning TT was won by Jack in 9mins 20secs from Ken Buckley (AW Cycles) at 9mins 37secs with Richard Prebble (Velosure- Giordana RT) in third with 9mins 39secs.
After a couple of hours rest the road race got underway on a slightly different course due to damage to the original course by the bad weather we had during the winter. After a couple of miles run out from the HQ the flag was pulled in and the racing got underway.

The first rider to attack the bunch was Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael); he soon built up a 38secs lead as the bunch seemed more content with marking each other. Beezer had his eyes on those close around his TT time and he was at the front of the peloton for the first three laps but when the worst of the rain fell he slipped back into the middle of the bunch.

After a couple of laps Rowan was joined by Paul Helyer (Blazing Saddles), Joseph Donohue (Southern Planning Practice Ltd) and Daniel Walker (Fareham Wheelers). This group quickly built up a 30secs lead but in the wind Paul and Daniel found the conditions difficult and both drifted backwards. Joseph and Rowan did persist for a bit longer but their gap soon started to dwindle. The remainder of the bunch was now being blown apart and there were soon little groups all over the course.

The next rider to show at the front was Rob Yateman (BH Solidor-WAM Youth) but in the worsening conditions it was not the place to be but he was joined by Rowan and Gunther Zechmann (London Phoenix) and they built a small lead of 12secs.

So at the halfway point Rowan puts in another big attack and drops the other two and this time it sticks as he soon builds himself a 20secs lead over the next two laps and he extends it to 38secs with just a couple of laps. However with just over a lap to go he is caught and passed and this is the last we see of him at the sharp end of the race.

At the bell we have two new leaders with a big lead of 55secs; they are Paul Sewell (Bigfoot CC) and Chris Zappala (Look Mum No Hands), but no sooner are they through the line and Chris goes all out and completes the last lap all alone to solo to the win. Jack Beezer was attentive to what was going on at the front and he pushed on and made sure he finished second to cut the time down ensuring he was victorious overall. Third on the road race was David Murrell (London Phoenix).

Chris’s win was justice as he was second last year having controlled the race for large amounts of it. The 36 year old originally from San Francisco and now living in Bermondsey London seemed to enjoy the harsh weather on offer today and said he had a point to prove after last year’s race and he was very happy to bury the demons of last years event.
