Joe Harris of Spirit Bikes RT ran out overall winner of the latest running of the Roy Ludford Memorial Tour of the Milburys promoted by the Team Axiom club held in the Meon Valley Hampshire. Harris won the afternoon’s road race and along with his earlier morning time trial stage he was a clear winner by 28secs.

The two stage race consisted of a 4 mile time trial followed a couple of hours later by a seven lap 73mile road race on the demanding Owslebury course about five miles from the mornings HQ.

The morning started warm and sunny with a slight wind all around the prologue course which changed directions as the 80 riders climbed for the most up to the top of Old Winchester Hill. VC Venta rider Paul Double made the most of the conditions clocking a fast time of 10mins 40secs, five seconds quicker than second place Ken Buckley (Eden Veranda Racing) with Peter Kibble ( Velocity Globalbike) at 11 secs.

After a couple of hours break Double collected the leader’s yellow jersey and the race rolled away from the HQ onto the road race course.

Once the peloton turned off the Corehampton road the flag was dropped and the road race got underway. The first rider to make the move was Matthew Downie (Eden Veranda Racing) who was allowed to slip away and he very quickly built himself a huge lead of nearly 2mins on the opening lap. Matthew using all his knowledge of the rolling course new exactly where to attack and it was proved a positive move on the young man’s part.

On lap two Downie was joined by Mark Perry (Look Mum No Hands) and the two riders working well together extended their stranglehold over the bunch now back at 1min 45secs. In between the leaders and the bunch a small group of four riders began to form and they in turn grabbed a handful of seconds lead over the bunch.

The next lap saw Downie and Perry’s lead begin to drop as the chasers began to take affect before Perry dropped back leaving Downie 35secs clear again on his own but he was soon to be joined again at the front.

While Downie was caught by Harry Veale (Cycleworks.co.uk), Daniel McKimm (Neon-Velo CT) and Freddie Phillips (Hoste TAAP Storck) the bunch behind was closing them down, but the young Southampton based rider was not prepared to relinquish his hard fought lead and again attacked but this was an attack to far as he soon was swept up and finally passed.

The new leaders tried to build a lead until Veale was forced back to the bunch after a nose bleed ended his challenge.

At the bell McKimm and Joe Harris were together with now Michael Guilford (VC Meudon) just behind at 7secs and the remainder of the bunch were now 55secs further back. As the lead riders approached the finish line it was Harris who had just too much for McKimm 2secs down and Guilford another four secs back and the bunch now finished 54secs down led in by Ken Buckley.
