A look at the Circuit of the Mendips National Road Series which is on this Sunday, June 16

Sunday 16th June | Start 10:30am – Finish 14:30 (approx.)

Start and finish location: Anchor Road, Bristol

The men will compete in the fourth round of the HSBC UK | National Road Series – the Circuit of the Mendips. Series leader Steve Lampier (Saint Piran) will be among those to contest the 95.6-mile course, which will start and finish in Bristol city centre and takes place over three inter-linked circuits across the Mendips.

Ian Bibby took victory at last weekend’s Lancaster Grand Prix, and will be part of a strong-looking Madison Genesis line-up which will also include Matt Holmes and Tom Moses. Following wins in the opening two rounds of the series, Canyon DHB p/b Bloor Homes are still top of the team standings, and a team including Rory Townsend, Tom Stewart and Alex Paton will be looking to consolidate that position on Sunday.

Also on the start line will be James Shaw (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling) and Daniel Tulett (Team Wiggins Le Col) who took second and third respectively in Lancaster, and Alistair Slater and Scott Thwaites (both Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK) who currently sit in the top ten of the series standings.

“Only the strongest will survive.”

That’s Madison Genesis rider George Pym’s verdict for the upcoming Circuit of the Mendips on Sunday 16 June. The Bristol-based rider will line up alongside Ian Bibby, Jon Dibben, Rich Handley, Matt Holmes, Tom Moses, Jon Mould and Erick Rowsell for round four of the British road series.

On inspection of the race route, Pym gave a full assessment about what he expects to be a very selective 154kms of racing on his local “The race is de-neutralised at the bottom of Dundry Hill, a kilometre-long effort with gradients of nearly 20%. It’s such a hard climb that it could be possible for a group of around 20 race favourites go clear and the peloton never sees them again – similar to what happened at the national championships”.

“If that doesn’t happen, I think the likely outcome is for the peloton to get progressively smaller over each climb. There are four steep climbs early in the race and I think on each one you will see riders getting dropped. The only easier part of the race will be on laps three and four, because the climb of Burrington is the only one that is not too bad. But by the time we reach that, the race to be in the lead group could already be over.”

The run in to the finish also brings its own challenges and much like last week in Lancaster, there is a climb just before the finish. It’s the other side of Dundry Hill and although it’s not as steep, it’s going to feel tougher with 140km in the legs. Whatever group goes into that climb, will be really small at the top”.

As for our chances, I think both Bibby and Tom Moses are going well. It’s a good one for us and as similar to last week as you’re going to get. It’s a good chance to really get some momentum if we can do the same as at Lancaster – that’s the mindset in the team.
I think if I’m going well I should be there, I’m feeling good and I hope I can be there to help at the end.”

Women’s Crit Course

The race gets under way at 10:30am, and is estimated to finish at approximately 2:30pm. Later on in the day, the first-ever standalone women’s HSBC UK | National Circuit Series begins, with round one – the Bristol Crit.

The peloton will take on laps of a 1.6km, city-centre course, with the likes of Jo Tindley (Campinese-Velo Performance), Ella Barnwell (Liv Cycling Club – Halo Cycles), Sophie Lankford (Team Jadan Weldtite – Vive le Velo) and Gabriella Homer (Cycle Team OnForm) all set to compete.

The Bristol Crit will begin at 3pm, and see riders complete an hour plus five laps of the course.

MEN’S COURSE
The Circuit of the Mendips starts at 10:30 in central Bristol and leaves the city through Hartcliffe and South Bristol before reaching the bottom of Dundry Hill – the race will be neutralised for this section, which is approximately 6.5 miles. The neutralised section will be at a controlled pace as there are a number of busy junctions which require caution.

Once on Dundry Hill the race is de-neutralised and passes through Chew Stoke on the way to the Mendips circuit. The main race takes place over 3 inter-linked circuits: The race climbs Harptree Hill before dropping down to Chewton Mendip, joining the B3114 through Litton, East Harptree and back to West Harptree.

The race then continues along the A368 through Compton Martin, Ubley to Blagdon, where it turns left to climb Blagdon Hill and then repeats through Chewton Mendip and back to Blagdon via West Harptree. The race then continues to the bottom of Burrington Combe, where it turns left to climb back up onto the Mendips.

The race then completes a further large lap, returning to the bottom of Burrington Combe via Chewton Mendip, West Harptree and Blagdon, before the final climb. The race continues back to West Harptree, where it turns right to begin the run back to the finish.

The 12.5 mile final section of the race back to the finish crosses the lakes to Chew Stoke and then Dundry, before taking the Bristol South link road to the Gurney Roundabout and then the final run back into the city centre, via Brunel Way and Anchor Road.

The lapboard and bell will be placed at the cross roads at the bottom of Harptree Hill and junction with the A368. This is the entrance and exit point from the Mendips circuit. At this position, a commissaire will be placed with a black flag to remove riders who have fallen behind the agreed time cut.
