Commonwealth Games: Wales

The 27 strong cycling team is one of the largest ever taken to the Commonwealth Games for Team Wales and one of the strongest with 2018 Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, Paralympic medallist James Ball, Rhys Britton and World Tour stars such as Luke Rowe and Stevie Williams leading what is an exciting group of Welsh athletes. The team will include 17 debutants which include a plethora of young and upcoming stars across the road and track which include names such as Josh Tarling, Rhian Edmunds, Emma Finucane, Lowri Thomas and Anna Morris.

The team also includes a number of athletes who have progressed through the Welsh Cycling performance programmes and who currently ride for the Wales Racing Academy – highlighting the work that has been done to produce talented athletes across multiple disciplines.

Head coach, Darren Tudor said “I’m really excited to announce the team that’s been selected for this year’s Commonwealth Games, with a mix of some of the most experienced bike riders in the world to athletes that have been selected for their first of hopefully many games. Every athlete will be proud to pull on the Welsh Jersey and I believe the Welsh passion will really shine when the Games starts in London. We want to make the Welsh public, cycling community, clubs, volunteers and members of Welsh Cycling proud of the team as without their crucial roles many of the athletes wouldn’t have been able to progress through the sport.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate every athlete on their selection.”

World Tour rider Luke Rowe said: “It’s something special to pull on the Welsh jersey. It’s not very often we get the opportunity to represent Wales, so it really is a huge honour – for some reason that Welsh jersey is just a little bit more special for a patriotic guy. Our goal is to win the race. On paper we haven’t got a favourite with it being a sprinters’ type course and we’ll be up against the likes of Cav (Mark Cavendish) and Caleb Ewan, but we’ll think outside the box and get in a favourable position to give us a chance at winning the race. We’ve got a strong team, we’ve got strength in depth, and we’ll throw a cat amongst the pigeons.”

“The sport in general is booming in Wales which is exciting to be a part of. As a nation we’re going to Birmingham on a mission. There are exciting times ahead — bring it on.”
