At a popular Boxing Day race meeting in South Africa, organised by the Paarl Amateur Athletic and Cycling club at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl, Alice and Lucas Towers (RST/Cycle Divison) did themselves proud with some great results.

The event is Africa’s largest track open and has not skipped a year since its inception in 1897 and this years was the 122nd Edition.  The event had an international line up including line-ups from Nigeria with five riders, Burundi with two, Rwanda with two, Togo with two and the Seychelles with two riders. And of course Alice and Lucas Towers from Great Britain.

One othe country’s top junior women, Alice Towers cleaned up in her races, winning against Elite women and Junior girls including some of the UCI Academy girls from Nigeria, Seychelles and South Africa. Alice won all her races, first against the junior girls (800 metres) and then against the Elite women in both their events.

Her brother Lucas Towers, who won the support race at the Sheffield Grand Prix this year, meanwhile had two podiums. In the shorter 800 metre race, not really suited to his style of racing, Lucas was third and he then moved up a position to second in the longer Under 17 5km race.

The big finale, the 25 mile Invitation event was won by Josh Van Wyk from Graeme Ockhuis and Jonas Rickaert.
