Report on the win by Griff Lewis in the Junior race
Young Clarach cyclist Griff Lewis has won a coveted Welsh Road Race Champion’s Jersey to partner the Junior Welsh Criterium Jersey he won the week before. On Sunday (Sept 19), the Welsh Road Race Championships took place in and around Newcastle Emlyn on a road circuit that took in the roads either side of the Teifi river in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.
Speaking after his win, Griff said: “I’m over the moon to have won two Welsh Jerseys in a week and ecstatic that I’ve now got my First Category racing licence. “I have one more race left this season which is the ‘L’etape’ in Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan this coming weekend which is a two-day, three-stage race ridden as a four-man team, which would be great if we could finish the season with another podium.
Sunday’s race was a punchy 63 miles course that had everything to test the skills and endurance of the rider. The race to be crowned Senior Men Champion and Junior Men Champions rolled out from the High Street at 2pm and sunshine and blue skies added to the crowds that lined the route giving huge encouragement to all the riders as they tackled this course. The Junior Race Card was full of talented young men who were really up for winning the converted Welsh Jersey. As the race developed, the Junior riders (16-18 year olds) could be seen well tucked in the peloton.
This tactic continued for the whole of the race and the race was therefore going to be decided in a bunch sprint into the Main Street of Newcastle Emlyn. As the riders turned left over the Teifi river bridge it was about getting in the right position up the small hill and then the sprint for the line. The sprint was full-on in the last 75 yards and saw Spencer Davies (Cross Gates Powys) Ben Bright(Mold) and Griff Lewis (Clarach, Aberystwyth) sprinting hard for the line, with Griff Lewis coming over the line to take the covered Welsh Road Race Champion’s Jersey to partner the Junior Welsh Criterium Jersey he won the week before. Some really good rides by were also registered by Ceredigion youngsters Dafydd Wright (Llanrhystud) and Jack Ramsbottom (Aberporth).
